Where the Downhill Slides Started (or Starts)

This is scheduled to be posted on the Monday of what promises to be a very busy week for most of us. For that reason, I will not be as “wordy” as I normally am.

At the same time, I want to accomplish a couple of things. I want to use Thanksgiving Day as a springboard for my thoughts. I also want to use this space to get all of us (yes, including me) to think.

You may already be very well aware of the passage in the first chapter of Romans in which The Holy Spirit inspired Paul to depict how depraved many people had become. Both the practice and the approval of all sorts of ungodly behavior are under discussion and are condemned.

Sadly, if you take the time to read that passage, you might start thinking that you are reading about the society/world in which we live. Things that once were not even discussed are now not only practiced but also promoted. People who even question ungodly behavior are ostracized and told that they are “on the wrong side of history.”

Maybe it would be beneficial to take a moment this admittedly busy week to remind ourselves about something. Maybe we need to read or reread Romans 1 and ask ourselves where and when the people who were being described in that passage started their “downhill slide?”

Could it be that there is a modern comparison to be made? Could it be that you and I need to do some serious self-examination?

Please read the following words as you prepare for what should be so much more than “turkey day.” In fact, I pray that all of us will consider these words every day and not just one day or one season of the year.

For although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God

or give thanks to Him… (Romans 1:21, ESV)
