Which Light is Brighter?

Contrary to what you might think at first, this is not my second post about basketball in three weeks. I am just taking advantage of the fact that some who read this may be looking forward to the NCAA championship basketball game which is scheduled to be played on the same day on which this post should appear. I thought that this might be the best time to “get this in” before some of us turn our attention from basketball to baseball.

As I watched the postgame press conference after the Kentucky Wildcats lost to Tennessee, I heard the Kentucky coach, Mark Pope, use a quote that he said that he had heard recently. I thought that the quote applied to much more than just basketball or any other sport. In fact, I think that it may have eternal consequences.

It made such an impact on me that I thought that I would reproduce it here:

“If the spotlight on you is brighter than the light that comes from within you, then it will destroy you.”

As I heard coach Pope share that quote, it reminded me of two different scriptures. I’ll bring this very short post to a close with those scriptures and a question that I need to ask myself. Maybe you do as well.

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall (Prov. 16:18).

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works,  and glorify your Father which is in heaven (Matt. 5:16).

Am I addicted to the spotlight that shines on me or am I committed to the One whose light shines from within me?
