Which Sea are You?
Both seas are originally fed partially by the snowmelt from the top of Mt. Hermon. Both are connected to the famous Jordan River. Both are mentioned in the pages of Scripture.
One sea is bright and beautiful. TripAdvisor has reviews that call it “peaceful and pleasant,” “beautiful and serene,” and “mesmerizing.” It is a lake long known for providing great fishing and a pleasant place to swim. The other sea is known simply as “dead.” The only life found in it is bacteria. It is so salty that people can’t really “swim” in it, but rather float or rub its mud on their skin.
By now, I’m sure you have figured out that the two seas are the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. But here is the question: if they have the same original source and connections, why are they so different? In a recent Bible study with the Henderson church of Christ through Zoom, Becky Welch helped us understand what makes the difference.
You see, the Sea of Galilee allows the water to flow through it, supporting its own refreshment and renewal. This happens because the water it receives, it also gives. As water flows into the north end, the sea feeds water to the Jordan River and beyond. In contrast, the Dead Sea collects the water, but there is no outlet. The water turns in on itself and evaporates.
Now, apply that to your life. Do you take in God’s blessings and take them for granted? Do you thank Him for the blessings, but keep them all to yourself? Or are you like that Sea of Galilee, that takes in the water and, in turn, blesses all around. Take a minute and do a quick Google search for an image of each sea. One is bright, beautiful, joyful. The other is salty, silty, and sad. I want to be like the sea where Jesus walked!
Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38)
