Who is Rejecting God?

It happened again. A familiar passage, but a new way of hitting the heart. This past Sunday night, our minister was doing the second in a series of lessons called “Conversations with God.” This lesson was about Moses and the conversation He had with I AM at the burning bush.

Most who are reading this have probably heard the list of excuses Moses gives before finally getting down to his final plea of “Send someone else!” (Exodus 4:13) Somewhere in the middle of the list is his fear of rejection.

Now, if we are honest, this is probably one of our greatest excuses about sharing the gospel with people. We may cloak it in other thoughts: “It will change our relationship.” “Won’t it make things weird?” “What if they think I’m ___?” That all boils down to a fear of rejection.

In 1 Samuel 8 when Samuel is feeling rejected by the Israelites, God tells him, “they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them” (verse 7). The point was made that we are only responsible for sharing the gospel, not for the person’s response.

The great commission tells us to go and teach. It doesn’t tell us we are responsible for their response. But it does tell us to go! That means if we aren’t sharing the gospel, we are the ones rejecting God!

While I don’t want anyone to reject God, I certainly don’t want to be guilty of that myself! Instead of worrying so much about what others think of me, I need to spend my time helping them come to know the only One who can save their soul.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)
