Why I’m Voting “Yes” Next Tuesday
One thing about our site that you may have noticed through the years is that we do not talk about political candidates or parties (except to mention both sides of an issue). We do not share how we are going to vote or how we did vote in elections for President, Senate, or any other position.
However, next Tuesday in my home state of Kentucky, there is a vote–not for a candidate or an office–that is one of the most important votes I will ever cast in my lifetime. It is one that I have prayed to have the opportunity to vote on since I was able to vote.
In Kentucky, there is an amendment to the state constitution on the ballot. Known as “Amendment 2,” it is a pro-life amendment, but one that is simply worded and comes from a very historical context.
The entire proposed amendment reads as follows:
“To protect human life, nothing in this Constitution shall be construed to secure or protect a right to abortion or require the funding of abortion.”
That’s the entire text.
Now, the historical context is, of course, how the United States Supreme Court somehow “found” a right to abortion in the US Constitution in order to decide the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. There has never been anything in the Constitution of the United States about abortion, but somehow, a majority of justices found one. Because of that, we lived under Roe for nearly a half-century.
So, next Tuesday, we in Kentucky have the ability to say that, under our state Constitution, no such language exists and no judge or justice can ever find it. Voting “yes” will save babies from dying. Voting “yes” will save lives.
As a Christian, and as one who is an adoptive parent, this issue is more than just important to me. It is top-of-mind each time I vote for anything even remotely connected to life in the womb. There are a lot of “what abouts” that people want to bring up to skew the issue, but it comes down to this: every life is made in God’s image and I will do all I can to speak for the unborn.
So, on behalf of generations yet unborn, I’ll be voting “yes” next Tuesday. If you live in the Bluegrass State, I pray you will do the same. The voiceless innocent are counting on you.
