6 Radio Tunes that Make Great Devotional Titles

The Bible is our only rule of faith and practice, but sometimes we need a little interesting way to “title” our message. While the message is the most important thing (and we should never get caught up in spending a ton of time looking for a title–as some of my sermons have shown!), there are still some great titles out there.

Maybe you teach short devotionals on Wednesday nights, at retreats, or for youth groups. Here are some songs that make for great titles and can lead you to some wonderful Biblical lessons. (The links take you to a YouTube video of the song.)

[One note: we are not, of course, endorsing everything in these songs, or the artists themselves. This is simply a list of good titles for devotional thoughts.]

1. “Man in the Mirror” (Michael Jackson). It’s hard to think of any song that makes a better title than one that deals with personal responsibility. Obviously, you can connect this with James’ teaching that we are to behold our face in a glass (or mirror).

2. “The Times, They Are A-Changin’” (Bob Dylan). I preached a sermon with this title about the change agent movement, but it could be used for a good devotional thought about ways in which we need to change with the times, too.

3. “I Want to Break Free” (Queen). What a great lesson title on sin or repentance!

4. “It’s All about Soul” (Billy Joel). How about a lesson for young people about how everything we do should be predicated on our walk with Christ with this as the title?

5. “Help!” (The Beatles). Obviously, this can be used for many purposes, but it would work well for a retreat setting dealing with personal issues or with marriage issues.

6. “God Only Knows” (The Beach Boys). I can see two purposes for this title. One would be a lesson about God’s omniscience. Another would be about placing things in God’s hands and leaving them there. This could help with a sermon on worry.

What are some others you have used or think of?

Tim McGraw – Live Like You are Dying. There are five points that are laid out easily in the song for a sermon and people like the song so they appreciate and learn from the sermon.

For the Preacher, “Ramblin’ Man” by the Allman Brothers. “The Weight” by the Band when talking about Burdens. “People are Crazy” by Billy Currington (omitting the beer reference!) when talking about false doctrine. “Over my Head” by the Fray when discussing anything in the book of Revelation. “Patience” by Guns n’ Roses…need I say more? “Running on Empty” by Jackson Browne when talking about spiritual emptiness. “Me and God” by Josh Turner when talking about relationships! “Go Rest High on that Mountain” by vince Gill when talking about getting to heaven.

I just went through my I-Tunes and had fun with this. I could have done more…but this will get a chuckle I hope.
