Church Life

6 Ways

People learn best in different ways. Some people can see something and have that information locked in their minds, while others need to hear it. Some people learn best by activity or spacial recognition.

Of course, though, all of us learn best if there is some combination of these things, so that it stimulates different parts of our brains.

Is it any wonder, then, why we make an announcement at the beginning of our worship service for a meeting at 5PM, and then wonder why only 2 or 3 people showed up?

Don’t rely on just one spoken announcement!

Some studies indicate that people need to take in information 6 different ways in order to make it permanent in their memory. I don’t know if that number is exactly true, but it should cause all of us to think about how we give people information.

Church budgets vary, so not every congregation can do everyone one of these, but here are 15 ways to share the same piece of information within a congregation.

1. Public announcements (Just be sure these are clear and to the point. That makes a difference, too.)

2. Notes read by teachers in Bible classes

3. PowerPoint announcements

4. Facebook

5. Twitter (it’s free. Here’s a free, short ebook I wrote on how to use it.) or other method of texting

6. The Church’s website

7. Email

8. Bulletin

9. A special handout at worship

10. Direct mail

11. Pamphlets/brochures

12. Bulletin boards

13. Church marquee

14. Special posters or banners

15. Phone calls

…and remember, these are just for members. There are all sorts of other ways to reach out to the community to advertise events.

Whenever you have a major event or announcements, do not settle for just one announcement. Also, though, do not settle for just one type of announcement. Choose at least 6 and make sure the congregation has no excuse to miss it!

QUESTION: What are some other ways than those listed above to share information with the congregation?

Special Announcement: On Friday, we will be making a huge, huge, huge announcement on our blog! We are thrilled about it. (No…we aren’t moving. No…we aren’t  having a baby. It’s blog related, but it’s still exciting!)
