A Two-Step Process to Making Thanksgiving More Meaningful

My favorite holiday is tomorrow! I love Thanksgiving. I know I have a bit of an idealized view of the holiday, but it is still my favorite. People slow down a bit and, for the most part, seem to relish what really matters.

However, as the years go by, Thanksgiving is just another day on the calendar for more and more people. We rush through everything and even head out to shop all afternoon, getting a jumpstart on Christmas. Honestly, I wonder how much longer Thanksgiving will actually be a holiday, since we don’t treat it like one!

Still, it is a great day, if we will make it so. Today, let me share with you a very simple two-step process to make Thanksgiving be all it can be. Are you ready?

STEP 1: Take real time to be thankful.

STEP 2: Have a no complaining policy.

That’s it!

We often pray before the big meal of the day and make sure to thank God for so many blessings, but do we ever take it beyond that? I want to challenge you to take some real time on Thanksgiving to get alone and just thank God. Make it personal and meaningful to you. As the song says, “It will surprise you what the Lord has done.”

And if there is a no complaining policy, that will add even more to the day. We have so much to be thankful for. For just one day, can we avoid complaining about what we do not have, or what we have that isn’t good enough? Each complaint eats away at our gratitude, so just avoid it on this one day. Oh, and see if you don’t feel better than you have in a long time when you don’t complain one time all day long.

I hope you have a great Thanksgiving, and I hope it is one where we truly show gratitude. God is so good, and I’m grateful our nation sets aside a day to remember that.
