It’s Even More Amazing Than That!
I love reading and studying apologetic matters. Though my mind cannot fully grasp all the scientific terms and arguments, I still enjoy studying the proofs from science, history, and other disciplines for the veracity of the Christian faith.
Often, we make some of those arguments in terms that are easily understood, but sometimes those stories or parallels don’t come close to getting at the real truth.
Here’s one.
How often have we heard (or said) that no one would believe that a dictionary was the result of an explosion in a print shop? Then, once people have a snicker from the thought, we make the statement that we are supposed to believe that everything we see occurred by some type of explosion and detail and design that is infinitely more impressive than a printed book is the result.
That’s a wonderful story and a good argument…
…but I want to suggest that it doesn’t go far enough, and for one very important reason.
What’s the reason?
The story assumes the existence of the print shop!
In other words, the raw materials necessary for printing a dictionary were already in the room. So, there is a chance–albeit a tiny, incalculably small–chance that an explosion could, in fact, produce a dictionary in bound format.
But when God created the world, there was nothing. He had no “raw materials” to work from. Even more amazing, He didn’t need any raw materials to work from! He spoke, and the glorious creation we behold came into existence.
So, while there is nothing wrong with the “print shop explosion” story to prove a point, let’s remember to tell the whole story. God needed no materials to do His glorious and all-powerful work.
He is truly an awesome God!
