Blank Slate
This new year offers a blank slate for all. 2022. What will you do with the new opportunities it provides? My children and I have also embarked on another blank slate: a new home. We are still in the same town but have downsized significantly and with that, comes the opportunity of another blank slate … or many.
All of this thinking about blank slates left me pondering something. I had to choose what to call them. If you noticed, I chose to say “opportunities.” I considered “challenges.” You see, some see a blank slate as scary or intimidating. In some ways, I guess we all do. However, when I realize that I never stare at a blank slate alone, I can see it as an opportunity. Psalm 139 is of great comfort to those who are facing a blank slate. It assures one that there is nowhere he can go that the Lord is not aware and already present. I also find great comfort in Romans 8:28 which tells me that all things work together for the good of those who love God. Be sure to note it does not say all things are good, but that they work together for good for those who love God.
And Jesus told us clearly how to love God. In John 14:15, he said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” One of those commandments is to walk in the ways God has prepared for us (Eph. 2:10) I believe part of that is to see blank slates as opportunities.
For instance, this new home is not just a blank slate for decorating and filling with our “things.” It represents a new neighborhood of people to invite to church, a new refuge for those who need a listening ear, a new opportunity to use it in whatever way God would have us use it.
May we all see the opportunities of blank slates and trust the One who already knows what should be written there.
