A New Look and a New Feature
We hope you like the new look of our blog. This template was chosen because it is a little more stream-lined (in my mind, anyway) than the old one. This is especially true with the items on the right-hand side. Also, we have added a new feature to the bottom of the page. Please check it out and click on the ads (I have read the “terms and conditions” and I can ask you to click on these ads just this one time throught the medium of this site). It won’t cost you anything, but it will help us earn some money from the blog. If you have a blog/website…

Paris Hilton's Religious Move
You don’t often read “Paris Hilton” and “Bible” in the same sentence (although you do read “Paris Hilton” and “sentence” together a lot recently). The heiress has decided that she needs to get some religion in order to avoid jail time. From the National Ledger’s Tina Sims: Paris Hilton has turned to Buddhism in her ongoing campaign to avoid jail. And if that doesn’t work she has a Christian Bible as well. The dog toting socialite – who has been sentenced to 45 or 23 days in jail for driving with a suspended license – was seen in Hollywood’s Bodhi Tree bookstore picking up a spiritual tome. And don’t forget…

News from 1983 Still True
In 1983, AIDS was still a new discovery. It was learned early on, though, that there was a high occurrence of the disease in homosexual men. Because of that fact, gay men were not allowed to give blood. Even with the nation’s continued moves to allow more rights to homosexuals, the US FDA has recently upheld that decision. The following comes from Medical News Today: The US Food and Drug Administration has confirmed its 1983 policy to refuse blood donation from gay men, or to be more accurate, men who have sex with men, in order to reduce the spread of HIV through blood donation. The FDA says that as a…

Thank You Joe Pa
It may seem “old school,” but it sure is a breath of fresh air. In an era when sports players seem to get away with anything with a slap on the wrist, Joe Paterno is laying down some discipline at Penn State. From Dan Wentzel at Yahoo! Sports: This spring, six Penn State football players were arrested and charged for crimes stemming from an off-campus fight in which at least 15 Nittany Lions were present. The charged included a couple of star players, although what apparently bothered coach Joe Paterno the most was how many of his kids were willing to be involved. And so Paterno, 80 now but no…

Good New Blog and Bulletin Article
A few weeks ago, I preached in a series of Gospel Meetings for the church of Christ in Doniphan, Missouri. The preacher there, Steve Sanders, is a good friend of our family. Steve recently started a blog and I used one of his articles for my bulletin article this week. Please take a moment to check out his blog (you may click below, and a permanant link has been added to the links list, too). Disturbing Update on Abused Child
We recently posted a link to the Houston Chronicle story about a man who put his infant baby in a microwave, severely burning the child. Over the past couple of days, more information has come to light in this story and we thought you might want an update. First, and very negatively, it has come to the forefront that the man has abused this precious child before. Again, the Houston Chronicle is our source: A man charged with injuring his daughter by putting her in a microwave oven also placed her in a refrigerator and in a hotel room safe, a police detective testified Tuesday. To read the entire article,…

Book Review: "Don't Ever Give Up!"
Bob Spurlin wrote Don’t Ever Give Up! in 2003. Many adult Bible classes have used this book as a way to study the Bible in a very practical way. The book discusses how we all face difficulties throughout life that can cause us to question many things, including God. Sadly, many use these difficulties as a way “out” of their relationship with God. Spurlin writes about several specific areas that can cause extreme strain on a person, including loneliness, disorderly children, financial troubles and even thoughts of suicide. The book is an easy read, but is also quite thought-provoking, making it useful for personal study or a Bible class setting.…

Coming on the 28th
The Creation Museum is set to open on Memorial Day (May 28th). This multi-million dollar museum (totally funded by donations) is designed to show dinosaurs and man together on the earth at the same time. The museum is located in Petersburg, Kentucky (see map). Obviously, since the museum is not yet open, I cannot vouch for everything in it being accurate. The idea of a museum like this one, though, is fascinating and much-needed. Here are a couple of links you may want to use for more information: The Creation Museum Website (includes hours, prices, and more) 10TV Goes Inside ‘Creation Museum’ (click on the slideshow for a sneak peek…

A Link You Won't Believe
You might have read the story about the man in Houston, Texas, who put his infant child in the microwave. Now, the mom is speaking out, and…it’s not the dad’s fault! Although it contains some graphic content, you will want to read the story from the Houston Chronicle.

A Preaching Family
It is always an honor to proclaim God’s Word, but sometimes a sermon stands out. Yesterday morning, it was an honor to stand before the 9th Avenue church of Christ for a very special reason. The sermon I presented yesterday morning was entitled “What a Mighty God We Serve!” and was based on the 11 verses of Psalm 46. It was special because of the subject matter, but it was also special because it came about in an interesting way. My dad (Jim Faughn), my brother-in-law (Jeremiah Tatum), Leah’s brother (Jason Moon) and I all four wrote parts of this sermon and then we put it all together. I presented…
