Just Two Weeks Away
Two weeks from today, the new blog dealing with the Christian and personal finance will launch. We are still on schedule to launch on June 1. We ask you to do three things: 1. Spread the word. Send an email with a link to this article or to the site itself. This blog is going to take much work, but it will be worth it if people actually read the content! 2. Link to the blog. We have already registered the blog on Technorati. So, if your blog or personal site is registered there, too, you will help us out by linking to it with an article. 3. Pray for…

"You'll Never Graduate" (Bulletin Article for May 20)
[NOTE: On Sunday, May 20, as so many other congregations do, the 9th Avenue church of Christ will be honoring our young people graduating from high school. This article was written with that in mind. It is a brief outline of one of the first sermons I ever preached in Somerville, Tennessee, when I served as the youth minister there.] Nearly every TV show has had a character who heard the words that every high school student is afraid of: “You’ll never graduate.” Graduation is simply a movement from one phase to another. It is as much a beginning as an ending. We all graduate many times in life. We…

The Bible: Obscene?
More than 800 Hong Kong residents have called on authorities to reclassify the Bible as “indecent” due to its sexual and violent content, following an uproar over a sex column in a university student journal. That’s the opening paragraph from a Reuter’s release about a controversy in Hong Kong over the Bible. Admittedly, 800+ people may not seem like that many in an entire nation, but it should still open our eyes to how much some people hate God’s Word. To read the rest of the press release, click here.

Rosie Has Totally Lost It
I know you don’t need to be told this, but Rosie O’Donnell has gone totally off the deep end. If you haven’t seen the accusations she is making now, you won’t believe the target: Ellen. That’s right, Rosie O’Donnell, an openly homosexual media star, is attacking Ellen DeGeneres. Why? Here is part of a report from an off-shoot site of the Logo network called “After Ellen”: Rosie O’Donnell’s in the news again, this time for comments she made in a new video posted on her blog suggesting (okay, outright stating) that the reason Ellen DeGeneres never talks about gay stuff on her show is that she is contractually forbidden from…

The Case Against MySpace
Social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook have come under heavy pressure in recent months. Concerned parents and law enforcement officials are worried about potential predators using these sites to prowl for underage victims (or victims in general). Eight attorneys general have brought a case against MySpace stating that the site should do whatever it can to dismiss convicted sex offenders from the site. Parents, have you seen your child’s MySpace page/profile? Do you know who is considered a friend on your child’s site? Have you seen the language, pictures and links used by many on sites such as MySpace? We need to be extra careful! Below are several…

Connecticut Supreme Court Hears Important Case
Connecticut was the first state in the US to allow same-sex unions, although they did not call them “marriages.” Homosexual couples were allowed certain privileges under the law, but were not allowed to get marriage licenses. Now, the same-sex couples in the state are taking a case before the state Supreme Court wanting full rights and the right to be defined as “married.” The court is supposed to unveil a ruling sometime later this year. The Big Announcement!!!
Since last Friday, we have been mentioning that a big announcement would be unveiled this week. So, of course, we waited all the way until Friday to unveil it. So, what is it? Four preachers, including me, have been working together on an idea for a new blog, and today we are giving you a “preview” of this new work. Joey Sparks of Jasper, Alabama; Wes Hazel of Manchester, Tennessee; James Dalton of Blytheville, Arkansas; and Adam are all four going to be administrators and writers for the new blog. Most “blogging experts” say that, for a blog to be successful, it must be focused in on a specific subject…

George Washington May Get Professor Fired
A professor at Glendale Community College has been placed on leave because of an email he sent last Thanksgiving. The following article was penned by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education: Walther Kehowski, a math professor at Glendale Community College in Arizona’s Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD), wishes he’d never e-mailedhis fellow employees Thanksgiving greetings last November. While reading a Web log, Kehowski found George Washington’s “Thanksgiving Day Proclamation of 1789” and decided to send it along to the Maricopa community the day before Thanksgiving, 2006. Using an e-mail address commonly used to send out announcements, Kehowski e-mailed the text of the proclamation – and a link to…

More PowerPoint Presentations Available
I have uploaded two more PowerPoint presentations to my SlideShare page. Unique in our Mindset. This was used for a youth devotional, and was well-received. SlideShare changed the color of the background, though, making it somewhat difficult to read. The Worst Kind of Pollution. This was used for a Wednesday evening devotional (actually I’m using it tonight), and carried forward the same idea as “Unique in our Mindset.” I spent quite a bit of time finding pictures for this presentation. This brings the total number of presentations available on my page to 8. Hopefully, I can continue to add them when I think they will be helpful. SlideShare: Adam Faughn’s…

A Christian Mother (bulletin article for May 13)
[NOTE: Sunday is Mother’s Day, so the following was written with that in mind. If you don’t want a “pre-Mother’s Day” present, wait until Sunday to read it!] A highlight of my year is the few minutes I spend on the phone on Mother’s Day with two special ladies in Paducah, Kentucky (my mother and grandmother). Mother’s Day is also special in our house now with Leah being a mother, two times over! But what truly makes today special is that I know that all three of these wonderful women are Christian mothers. I never had to wonder if mom was going to worship. She was going, and was probably…
