Encouraging Christian Single Parents
Parenting is a monumental task. God has set a very high standard for parents, and the work is difficult. When we consider the amount of time, energy, thought, prayer, and faith that it takes to raise godly children, it is a daunting task, indeed. But some–in fact, a lot–of adults are doing the work alone. According to the Census, some 10,500,000 households in America (in 2008) are led by a single parent. [pdf to “Fact Sheet”] According to the same source, around 29% of all children in America are currently living in a home led by one parent. This post is not meant in any way to berate single parents. Most…

Ask the Readers: What to Write?
Today’s post is simply a question. Please take a moment to read the question, and then the guidelines, then leave a comment. The question is: What would you like to see us write a post about? That’s right, it’s readers’ choice! My goal is to collect up to 10 of your suggestions and then scatter them throughout the month of July. Here are the guidelines. 1. Leave a comment to this post with a title or theme you would like to see us write about in July. 2. Suggestions must be related to the overall theme of our site: Christian living, family, the Church, etc. 3. We will not write posts…

He Understands
Each time I read through the four accounts of the Gospel, I learn. Further, I am encouraged more and more by many things. In recent months, though, I have been so deeply encouraged by this simple fact: Jesus understands. He truly does understand. If you have ever felt betrayed, Jesus understands. If you have ever been frustrated by friends, Jesus understands. If you have ever been hungry or thirsty, Jesus understands. If you have ever prayed, “Get me out of this!” Jesus understands. If you have ever had a friend question you, Jesus understands. If you have ever felt the need to just get away, Jesus understands. If you have…

Satan’s Greatest Deception
Let’s give credit where it is due, though it is awful to consider: Satan is very good at what he seeks to do. If we as Christians were as persistent and effective at our job of teaching and encouraging, this would be a very different world. Paul tells us that we are not ignorant of the devices that Satan uses (2 Corinthians 2:11). If we will just “be sober” and “be vigilant” (1 Peter 5:8), we can see how the devil operates. Some of his tactics are overt and clear. While things like prostitution, cold-blooded murder, and lying in a courtroom may be obvious sins, they still are done by…

Mini-Post: Barclay on Philippians 1:21
I found this quotation while doing some study on Philippians 1 for a Bible class. The verse “for me to live is Christ; and to die is gain” is one of my favorites. I know that William Barclay “misses it” on a lot of subjects, but he nails it in commenting on this verse. Enjoy this great paragraph. For Paul, Christ had been the beginning of life, for on that day on the Damascus road it was as if he had begun life all over again. Christ had been the continuing of life; there had never been a day when Paul had not lived in his presence, and in the…
