When Getting a 100 Is Not a Good Thing (originally published September 21)
101 companies in the United States should be embarrased, but they are very proud. They all received a score of 100% when it came to dealing with gay, lesbian and transgender workers. The article, reported by World News Daily, may be viewed on ChristianCourier.com. Large American companies such as MetLife and Best Buy received the perfect score and are glowing over their accomplishment. It is truly sad that one of the company spokesman said that the old adage is true, “What is good for business is good for America.” Friends, this is not good for America! The Bible teaches that “righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to…

Is the Bible "Out-Dated"? (originally published September 16)
When the New Testament was completed almost 2000 years ago, God finished His revelatory work (cf. Jude 3). Sound, faithful Gospel preachers search from Genesis through Revelation to find “time-less” lessons. However, many people claim that a 2000-year-old book written in another culture on the other side of the world could not possibly be relevant to our fast-paced 21st century American lifestyle. However, God is the Author of this volume, and He knows best what man’s needs are. If the truth is known, man’s most basic needs never really change. Needs such as salvation, love and acceptance are universal and do not have time constraints. Every person in every culture…

Todd Clippard in Ghana Preaching (originally published September 14)
On Monday, September 12, brother Todd Clippard, who preaches for the Burleson church of Christ, departed for his annual mission trip to Ghana. He will be gone about 11 more days at the time of this writing. Brother Clippard preaches and holds Bible studies, but he also helps train Gospel preachers while in the west African nation. It is our hope to get a report and pass it along to you when he returns from this year’s trip. The church is growing in Ghana (as it is in many west African nations) and there are very few signs that this growth will slow anytime soon. Please keep brother Clippard in…

Book Review: "Waves of Change" (originally published September 13)
Kyle Butt, who works at Apologetics Press in Montgomery, Alabama; and his brother Stan Butt, Jr., who preaches for the Chapel Hill church of Christ in Chapel Hill, Tennessee; have written a very good book for teenagers entitled Waves of Change. I recently finished reading this book and I highly recommend it for use with teenagers. To be frank, I am very critical when it comes to teenage Bible school material. Many books are filled with “fluff” and they “gloss over” issues that are of extreme importance. This book is not like that. If you have read Out with Doubt or A alphabolin Matter of Fact (both written by Kyle…

TV Show "Relauch" Teaches Lessons (originally published September 13)
When The Family Guy was originally launched on the FOX television station, it was met with a response that was not overwhelming. It had a decent following, but nothing special. After about three seasons, the show was cancelled. However, over the next several months, something unprecedented happened. The internet began to “buzz” about the show. Web sites, chatrooms and blogs were begun featuring nothing but this defunct show. Questions began to arise as to where videos and DVDs of the show could be acquired. Interest was so wide-spread that FOX made a decision very rarely made in the industry. Nearly two years after cancellation, the network heads told The Family…

Keeping Our Kids Safe (originally published September 13)
Many of you have heard the story of the young boy who drowned in a baptistry at a church of Christ in Georgia. It was reported in The Christian Chronicle several months ago and has caused many congregations to “rethink” the safety of their meeting house. [The article follows below.] Our new auditorium is very safe when it comes to the baptistry. It is locked most of the time and there is no water in it unless someone responds wanting to put Christ on in baptism. Our balcony is also locked from one side, although it can be accessed from the back, so some children go up there from time-to-time.…

"Throw-Away" Chapters? (originally published on September 9)
There are many chapters and verses in the Bible that are those “oh, no!” chapters. These are the ones that, when you are trying to complete your daily Bible reading, you hope and pray are not the last chapter you have to read. These are the chapters that contain name after name after name. Kids dread them for Bible Bowl study and adults don’t usually care for them much, either. Working on some material on the book of Nehemiah, which contains a chapter that seems to have very little relevence, Adam came up with some points to remember. Chapter 3 of Nehemiah lists all the workers on the wall and…

Katrina Aid is "Unconstitutional" (originally published September 8)
Christians all over America (and beyond) are doing whatever they can to aid the victims and evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. In Northern Alabama, churches have collected literally tons of aid and thousands of dollars to help Christians and non-Christians alike. We are doing our best to follow Paul’s admonition to the Galatian congregation: “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, but especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10). (Ellen Johnson) However, as one might expect, there are some that are using this horrific tragedy as a way to promote their sinful ways. The American Atheist Organization (AAO) is saying that…

Katrina (originally published August 30)
Another year, another hurricane! As I write this, the breeze is still blowing a little bit, but things have calmed down a whole lot. There are hundreds of limbs and branches down all over Haleyville, and I’ve seen about 10 large trees uprooted. Most everyone in town has power again, but we are not among that group. Our power went out just after midnight and we are still without. The church building got power back about 10:30 this morning. The main thing is that we are safe. I guess we’ll start bracing for another hurricane next July (since Ivan came through in September 2004 and Katrina in August 2005).

I Learned it from TV (Originally published August 25)
Many Christians are appalled at the language on television these days. Curse words and the taking of God’s Name in vain seem to be routine on television anymore. Sadly, many Christians do not even care! However, there are other lessons that we “learn” by watching television. Think for a moment about the more popular sit-coms, reality shows and day-time soaps. What lessons do they teach us (and our children)? Here are some things our children might say if you asked them what they learn from television: If you’re having a bad day, head to the local bar or grab a beer from the refrigerator. If you are celebrating, join your friends…
