The 50 Most “Unbreakable” Records in Sports : 40-36
To read the introduction, click here. Previous parts of the list are here: 50-46 , 45-41. ——————————— 40. Ted Williams .482 career on-base percentage The “moneyball” era has changed how teams and fans view offensive statistics. We still value batting average, home runs, and RBIs, but On Base Percentage has become one of the most consistent ways to measure offensive effectiveness. That considered, Teddy Ballgame is the hands down career leader in OBP at .482. Only four players have eclipsed .482 in a single season in the 51 years since Williams retired (Mickey Mantle, Norm Cash, Frank Thomas, and Barry Bonds; Bonds did it in multiple seasons). Todd Helton (.4213)…

The 50 Most “Unbreakable” Records in Sports : 45-41
To read an introduction to the list, click here. For numbers 50-46, click here. —————————– 45. Brett Favre throws 336 career interceptions While it sounds as though this is a bad record, it’s really not. Favre played for 20 seasons, in every game during those years, and threw the ball a lot during all those games. Naturally, INTs will add up. But the obvious factor in Favre’s pick-throwing prowess is that he was good enough to play all those years, games, and snaps. Favre’s INT % is actually a respectable 3.3%. That’s better than 22 Hall of Famers (including Jim Kelly, Roger Staubach, and Johnny Unitas). The closest active players to…

The 50 Most “Unbreakable” Records in Sports : 50-46
[For an introduction to the countdown, click here.] Today, we begin the list of the most “unbreakable” records in all sports by unveiling numbers 50-46. Enjoy these first five records! ———————————– 50. Baltimore Bullets make NBA playoffs with 16-54 record (.229 winning percentage) This record is the direct result of the NBA’s small size. Eight of the ten NBA teams at the time made the playoffs. So, while the Bullets were bad, the Philadelphia Warriors were even worse. Six of the Bullet’s 16 wins came against the Warriors. They went 10-50 against the league’s other eight teams. They lost their playoff series against the Knicks in two games, but making…

The 50 Most “Unbreakable” Records in Sports : Introduction
It’s one of the reasons we buy tickets, fill seats, and watch game after game. It’s one of the great debates among avid fans of all sports. It’s one of ways a name becomes synonymous with the history of a sport, either for good or bad. It’s the record that will “never” be broken. The old sports adage is, “Records were made to be broken.” There are some records, though, that have either (1) stood so long, or (2) are so far afield from any other number that they–we think–will never be broken. So, we decided to list them. And, yes, I mean “we.” I am a huge fan of…

“Greater Things” Thursday #36: Gospel Meeting Advertising
Lebanon Road’s 2011 theme is “Greater Things.” For an introduction and video to this theme, click here. Each Thursday we are highlighting a different area in which we are striving for greater things. —————————– Today’s post begins a two-Thursday “run” about our upcoming Gospel Meeting. In a time when many congregations are dropping the idea of a Gospel Meeting, Lebanon Road is having her first meeting in several years! I’ll have more to say about the actual meeting next week. For this week, I want to share with you the steps we are taking in advertising for the meeting. None of these are truly “original,” but we have really tried…

More Than Just “Another” Date
NOTE: This article is what I wrote for the front page of the bulletin this week at Lebanon Road. With Sunday being the anniversary of 9/11, I felt it was appropriate to say a few words about that event. I rarely publish my bulletin articles on the blog, but I felt this one was worth putting on here for all to see. ——————————– Certain dates stand out on our calendar for different reasons. Maybe a date in the spring jumps out at you because it is the anniversary of when you proposed. Maybe a bittersweet winter date is the anniversary of when a dear, faithful loved one passed from suffering…

“Greater Things” Thursday #35: Elders’, Deacons’ & Preachers’ Retreat
Lebanon Road’s 2011 theme is “Greater Things.” For an introduction and video to this theme, click here. Each Thursday we are highlighting an area in which we are striving for greater things. —————————— Our emphasis this week is on an event that is coming up later this month. In 2010, we held our first ever leadership retreat, as all our elders, deacons, and preachers met for an all-day session of encouragement, information, connection, and planning. It was such a success that, when we were putting events on the 2011 calendar, several suggested that we go ahead and schedule another retreat for 2011. Many congregations never have a retreat for their…

It’s Time for a Poll! Please let your voice be heard!
Over the past few weeks, I have been doing a lot of thinking/dreaming/planning about our blog. One of the plans is to start an email newsletter that connects back to the blog, but that includes material not already on here. However, I want the newsletter to have a specific focus. I want to send out an email newsletter (for free, of course) that includes tips, links, resources, and words of encouragement for those who teach or help with adult Bible classes. Often, those who teach adult classes can feel “left out” when it comes to resources and “helps.” I want to change that! But, I only want to do this…

“Greater Things” Thursday #34: Ladies’ Bible Class
Lebanon Road’s 2011 theme is “Greater Things.” For an introduction and video to this theme, click here. Each Thursday, we are highlighting a different area in which we are striving for greater things. ———————— Next week, our Tuesday Ladies’ Bible Class will start up its fall meeting times. These ladies meet (basically) during the regular school year on Tuesday mornings for a wonderful period of study. They do not meet on Tuesdays when Nashville’s Metro schools are out for holidays or weather. These classes are tremendous. One of our dear ladies teaches regularly, but other ladies teach from time-to-time as well. Most of them are regular members of the class,…

2011 College Football Preview
It’s time for my ever-annual, always-wrong college football preview! Why should you keep reading when I’m always wrong? So you can trash me on Twitter throughout the year! (You do follow me on Twitter, right? If not, why not?!?!) Anyway, on with the preview. We’ll look at the the six BCS conferences, then you can read my 10 bold predictions. ACC Let’s make this clear: if Florida State does NOT win this conference, it will be a totally ruined season in Tallahassee. The Seminoles play Oklahoma early in the year, and I think that might be the only game they lose (if they lose that one). Big East What the Big…
