Friday Links Roundup: Missionary Weekend Edition
This weekend at Lebanon Road is going to be very special. We are having a Missions Weekend. We had one of these two years ago, and we would like to do continue doing this about every other year. Lebanon Road supports 8 full-time missionaries (plus some other works). On this weekend, all eight of these missionaries and their families will be with us for a series of events. There will be meals, meetings with our elders, trips to Christian bookstores, and worship together on Sunday. Our missions committee deserves a great deal of thanks for piecing this together and keeping in contact with our missionaries to make sure all their…

Thursday Hymn Reflection: “Though Your Sins Be as Scarlet”
[NOTE: Each Thursday, we reflect on a hymn. Many are suggested by our readers. If you would like us to add your favorites to our list, please leave a comment with up to three favorite songs, and we will reflect on them in the future.] ————————— A Fanny Crosby-W.H. Doane song, “Though Your Sins be as Scarlet” is one of my all-time favorite hymns. The first verse (and title) are based upon Isaiah 1:18, and the entire song takes the theme of forgiveness and encourages the hearer to find his forgiveness in the Lord. While Crosby wrote over 8000 hymn texts, and Williams Doane contributed the music to many of…

Thursday Hymn Reflection: “Sing and Be Happy”
[NOTE: Each Thursday, we reflect on a hymn suggested by our readers. If you would like us to write about your favorite songs, leave a comment with no more than 3 suggestions and we will add them to our list.] ————————————- Written and composed in 1940, Emory S. Peck’s song “Sing and Be Happy” is a favorite for many people. With a simple, upbeat tune and an even more upbeat message, this song is one of the more encouraging hymns that we often sing. I’ve often said that this song’s message makes it sound like a Broadway show tune. But it is far more than that. The song is not…

If I Could Fix College Football
I have favorite teams in nearly every sport. I pull for those teams above any other. However, for a long time I have had a soft spot for the underdog. I love watching the “little teams” in college sports break through. Last year, I was one of the folks who thought that TCU deserved to play for the BCS national championship game. Win or lose the game, I felt like they deserved to be there. This year, I am fully on the Boise State bandwagon, and hope TCU has another year like last year. After the Boise State Broncos went to Washington, D.C., and defeated Virginia Tech (another team in…

Friday Links Roundup: Hamburgers On the Grill Edition
I love periods of fellowship with our church family. We have the “usual” potluck meals from time-to-time, but we also do other meals that have themes or where we get together away from our building. Tomorrow, we are having one of those events. (No, we’re not getting together to burn the Quaran.) We are going to enjoy a picnic together at one of our local parks. This is a great way to get together in a relaxed setting with plenty of activities for the children. If your congregation hasn’t had a fellowship (besides the traditional covered dish potluck) in some time, why not do so soon? It’s a great way…

Thursday Hymn Reflection: “There Is a Fountain”
[NOTE: Each Thursday, we “reflect” on a hymn suggested by our readers. If you would like to add your favorites to our list, leave a comment with up to 3 suggestions.] ————————— Originally entitled “Praise for the Fountain Opened,” this great old hymn was written after a time of battle with depression by the famous English poet William Cowper (pronounced like “cup-er”). Cowper suffered from very unstable emotions, and was a manic depressive. “There is a Fountain” was written in 1772, following his first major bout with depression, and that rise in stability and excitement finds its way into the beautiful lyrics of the song, especially in the words of…
