Friday Links Roundup: Not the Sunday for an Attendance Drive Edition
We aren’t having an attendance drive this week. Why? About 15% of those who usual attend Lebanon Road on Sunday morning are going to be at Challenge Youth Conference in Gatlinburg. About 42 people from Lebanon Road are headed to this good event this weekend, and we know they are going to have a good weekend, learning about God’s Word and enjoying the time together. We are blessed with a lot of adults who help with trips like these, and (of course) we have great young people who attend. However, while we aren’t having an attendance drive, we still want you to be with us! We are continuing our series…

Thursday Hymn Reflection: “Create in Me”
With words taken directly from three verses of Psalm 51, “Create in Me” has become an often-sung song among many folks, but especially young people. It is one of my favorite songs, as I always like songs that quote Scripture. Psalm 51 was written in the aftermath of David’s affair with Bathsheba, and all that relationship led to. Finally, Nathan came before David and David admitted to the sin. Nearly every scholar agrees the words of this 19-verse psalm were written soon after this admission of sin. What makes “Create in Me” such a powerful song is that it is a song in which the singer is admitting deep guilt…

Friday Links Roundup: Party Like It’s 19….EIGHTY-NINE Edition
Okay, so this is an off-the-radar college basketball introduction to this week’s links, but it was worth sharing. When I first really got into college hoops was about the time Loyola Marymount made their magical run to the Elite Eight, though the best player on the team, Hank Gathers, had died during the season. The famous image from that year was his best friend and teammate, Bo Kimble, shooting one free throw in each game with his left hand, in honor of his fallen buddy. (See video below) Late last night, LMU did the unthinkable, and upset highly-ranked Gonzaga. For a brief few moments, it was a great memory of…

Hymn Reflection: “Follow Me”
One of the great missionary hymns of all time, “Follow Me” is less than 60 years old, but is one of a most beloved song. Ira Stanphill, who is probably more well-known as the composer of “Mansion over the Hilltop” (written 4 years prior to “Follow Me”), did what is very hard to do in common church music: he wrote a story-song that continues to be popular. From a musical standpoint, the song does not follow the usual “verse, chorus, verse, chorus” format. In fact, it has no chorus; instead, it is a three-verse thought from one who has worked for Jesus, then realizes what Jesus went through for him.…

Friday Links Roundup: Hearts, Roses, and Banquet Edition
It’s Valentine’s Day weekend, and that means that it’s time for all the “frilly” stuff that goes along with it. All those stores with red and pink hearts and roses all over everything, commercials trying to get you to buy anything and everything for the “perfect” Valentine’s Day gift, and kids coming home from school with more flowers and candy than any of us has ever received–total–in our entire lifetime. By the way, just as a bit of a rant, it’s totally ludicrous how much some parents buy their children for Valentine’s Day! I know of schools that even gave students the day off, because they got tired of spending all…
