Town Hall for Hope 1

The Power of an Idea
Tonight, Leah and I are going to the Mount Juliet church of Christ for a very special evening. Dave Ramsey is leading the Town Hall for Hope from Oklahoma City. The event is being shown all over America. The Town Hall for Hope is designed to provide hope in the midst of this economic distress. Ramsey promises to provide some history, some theology, and some practicality during his 30-minute address. Following the speech, there will be a one-hour question and answer session. Questions are being submitted by studio audience members, email, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. Here is the official promotional video for the evening (very much worth watching!). While I’m…

Q4Y: "Roman?"
Today’s post is a question for our readers. (Q4Y = Question for You) Please reply with comments so others can respond to your comments, too, if needed. One of my friends sent this question to me in an email, and I asked his permission to reprint it here for your consideration. He graciously agreed and I know he would like to see several perspectives on this. I’m reprinting his question verbatim from the email: “Was Jesus a Roman citizen?” After that initial question, he wrote the following: Paul was a Hebrew but also a Roman citizen I suppose based on birth in Tarsus. Is that one reason the Romans had to…

Doesn't That Matter, Too?
Okay, I have to confess two things before I begin this post. 1. I have never been a fan of beauty pageants. It really bothers me that we take small girls and tell them to be pretty because that’s what matters. So, this post is jaded a bit by that viewpoint. 2. I totally agree with Carrie Prejean’s statement about gay marriage. Marriage should be between a man and a woman. That’s not only a “family raising” thing, it’s a Bible thing. The Miss USA pageant should have known that, by choosing Perez Hilton as a judge, they were just asking for trouble. Now, with those two points out of…

Triple Book Review
I’m starting to like these multiple book reviews. I don’t write long reviews, so it makes more sense to put a couple together. Today, there are three. —————————— The Quest for Character John MacArthur This is a very brief, devotional-style book. It has 41 chapters, but only fills 143 small pages. The idea behind this volume is to walk the reader through three “lists” in the Bible that help build Godly character. MacArthur gives brief devotional thoughts on each of the Beatitudes, the fruits of the spirit, and the characteristics of love from First Corinthians 13. I found this book to do well for its intended purpose (give a brief…

Friday NO Links Roundup
That’s right, I’m not doing any links this week. Oh, I’ve read some good posts, but I’ve had quite a week, as those who follow me on Twitter (http://twitter.com/faughnfamily) or Facebook know. As I type this, it’s almost 3 PM and I’ve been at a local hospital sitting with a family. Jeremy Lamb, who has been visiting with us recently with his fiancee, Heather Shea, had triple bypass surgery today. He’s just 26 years old. The surgery took almost six hours, but he’s out and doing as well as can be expected. In a little while, I’m eating supper with my family, then headed to the softball fields for Lebanon…

Besides Books…
One of the constant features of this blog is a regular book review. If you’re fairly new to our blog, you might not know that I try to read at least 40 books each year. (So far in 2009, I’ve finished 16.) However, books are not all I read. Of course, I also read books to my children (which would be waaaay more than 40 each year!), but there are other materials I read. Following are four groups of things I read on a regular basis. 1. Blogs and Websites. On the right side of our blog is a list of the blogs that are in my feedreader (I use…

"Minor" Details?
I’ll admit it: there are sections of the Bible that I think are hard to understand. And, yes, there are times when I read something and wonder, “Why would God include that?” Studying for my Sunday night sermon this morning, I came across a detail I had read countless times with really no particular feeling. I was sure it was there for a reason, but I had only heard one seemingly unimportant reason ever given. It’s found in Joshua 3 (yes, Lebanon Road folks, that’s the text for Sunday night). As God’s people prepare to cross the Jordan River, we are told in a parenthetical statement, “Now the Jordan River…

Option 2
Below is a template for the Lebanon Road Report that I’m thinking of doing each week. (A huge “thank you” to Neal Richey for inspiring me to go through with this.) Let me know if you like the usual post, or the updated newsletter. This only takes a couple of extra minutes, but I thought it might add some “design” to the updates. Additionally, this update is 8.5×11, so you can print it on one sheet of paper if you want. Leave comments and let me know which you enjoy more.
