Color Design

I have finally had a summer where I had time to paint and enjoy decorating again! Most summers are so packed with camps, mission trip, vacation, and other activities that I feel like any time at home is needed for rest before the rush of the next school year begins. So far this summer, I have painted the family room, two hallways, a bathroom, and whitewashed the brick fireplace. It has been great!

Ahead of the actual painting time is the planning time – a time where you look at colors that work together. “Colors that work together” has been a very interesting concept this summer hasn’t it? In our world, one might believe no colors “work together” but all are at odds. However, if you look into color design you find phrases like complimentary colors, contrasting colors, and coordinating colors – all phrases that suggest you need more than one color to create good design.

That shouldn’t be surprising. I have a small, ceramic figurine in my bedroom that I have kept since childhood. In fact, I think a very special Bible class teacher gave it to me. It is a little girl with an art easel that reads “Dear God, When You made the sea … the sky … the earth … and the rainbow and everything, You must have had lots of colors.” Friends, God didn’t just have lots of colors; He created them!

God loves variety: in colors, flowers, trees, landscapes, skin tones, voice tones … and on and on it goes. Why can we, as His creation not figure out that different colors, whether they by contrasting, coordinating, or complimentary, are good and even necessary for well-rounded design whether we are talking about walls in a house or society as a whole?

I find it very interesting that the Bible doesn’t talk about skin color. In fact, almost half of the times you read about “skin” it is in Leviticus talking about watching for sickness and another large chunk of mentions are referencing containers for liquid! I would argue that if skin color were important, God would surely have mentioned it! Instead, in Acts 17:26 we read, “And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings” (NKJV). God goes farther in inspiring these words: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).

Contrast with each other. Compliment each other. Coordinate with each other. God’s color design, with all of those design theories, may best be described by a favorite children’s song: “Red and yellow, black and white; they are precious in His sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world.”
