Double Book Review

I’m a little behind on my book reviews, so I thought I’d just mention two books I finished in the last couple of weeks.

1. Failing Forward (John Maxwell). Maxwell is the leadership guru, and has written many books on the topic. I have a stack of them (thanks, Mandi!) and look forward to reading them over the next few months. This book deals with a topic we don’t like to think of, but one that is common: failure. We all fail, but how do we handle it? Failing Forward is filled with stories of those who used failure to learn and move forward. Instead of thinking “failure is not an option,” we need to think, “I will fail, but can I grow from it?” This book does not have a deeply religious message, but you can easily see how some of the quotes, stories, and lists could be used in lessons and sermons. If you enjoy leadership books, this one truly is unique.

2. The NET Bible. This is hard to call a “book” review, since I didn’t read this in book form. Instead, I read it on my iPhone! I read in the mornings and during my free time. While you can purchase the book, this version can also be read online. One of the interesting features of this translation is that there are almost 61,000 translator’s notes, which make this volume helpful. Personally, I would recommend not purchasing the Bible, but reading it online and using the internet for the notes. While I won’t be preaching from this Bible, I’m glad I read it, and look forward to using some of the notes for further study and reference.
Whew! Now I’m caught up…until I finish another book tonight or tomorrow.
