Jevovah-Nissi = The Lord My Banner
I’ve been doing some study lately about the names for God in the Bible. The book entitled God, Pass By Me: Seeing God’s Glory through His Names, Titles, and Descriptions by Casandra Martin is a great study of this topic. Jehovah-Nissi is one name that really caught my attention.
Lately, it seems as though every direction I turn there is something to raise my stress level. There are health issues, time crunches, people who claim to be Christians who are sowing discord in the church, people are grumbling and complaining. Along with all of this there are national disasters, loss of life, and the list could go on and on.
And then I study this name for God – Jehovah-Nissi. The Lord is my banner. And I remembered a song we used to sing in Bible class and at Vacation Bible School. We would sometimes make simple little triangle flags to raise as we sang. The song went like this:
Faith is the flag that’s flown in the castle of my heart,
In the castle of my heart, in the castle of my heart.
Faith is the flag that’s flown in the castle of my heart
When the King is in residence there.
So wave it high in the sky, let the whole world know,
Let the whole world know, let the whole world know.
So wave it high in the sky, let the whole world know,
That the King is in residence there.
Sometimes we would add verses by using different kinds of flags – love, joy, peace. But it’s that faith flag (banner) that will help me when I’m feeling so overwhelmed with all the negative and hurtful things that may be going on around me. Not faith in myself or others, but faith in Jehovah-Nissi – the Lord is my banner. I listen to Him as He speaks to me in His word, and I know He listens to me as I speak to Him in prayer.
It is under God’s banner that I try to live my life – obeying Him and trusting Him even when times are hard. Faith is the flag that’s flown in the castle of my heart.
