Language Lessons
I am an admitted word nerd. I love language and anyone who knows me is not surprised to read that I love to talk. I have a degree in communication and reading is my escape mechanism.
In a recent sermon, Jeremiah talked about the people in Genesis 11 who formulated a plan to “…build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth” (verse 4). If I remember correctly, he posed the question, “What was that common language?” I remember for sure that he queried how it all worked once God “… confuse[d] their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech” (verse 7).
As Americans, we often are accused of expecting everyone to speak “our” language (which my history-loving son would point out is borrowed or stolen). We even accuse those from whom we borrowed our language of speaking it “wrong” and can’t even agree within our own borders how to all pronounce words the same.
All of these thoughts led me to think about another land and wonder about the language there. What language will we speak in heaven?
My first thought was love. After all, “God is love” (1 John 4:8). And I do believe there will be love in heaven. In fact, I think it could be argued that love IS heaven.
Then I realized that God, in His wisdom, already told us the language of heaven. It is deeper and higher and richer even than love. It is praise for the One who is love. Are you studying to be fluent when you get to heaven?
“After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!’ And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.’”
