Pieces of My Heart

Making the decision to have a child – it is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. ” – Elizabeth Stone

The idea for this post came from my tweet last week when I returned from Mexico. What I tweeted at that point was: “Home from Mexico. Left pieces of my heart there but thankful to be back to the ones here who hold the largest chunks!”

Then a little earlier this week, I watched two pieces of my heart drive off to the high school – one to his last first day of public school and the other to a new beginning as a freshman. Another was excited that today “is our first girl day going to school!”

And it doesn’t stop with my own children. As I alluded to earlier, I left pieces of my heart in Mexico with the beautiful children and workers at the City of Children. A few are scattered throughout Ensenada in the homes of fellow Christians I got to meet on our day of benevolence.

There are special pieces in Paducah. Some in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and others walk in and out the doors of Prescott South Elementary on a daily basis. There are another 450-500 pieces that come in and out of the Willow Avenue church building weekly. You get the idea.

But how many pieces can one heart expand to include?

I stopped to consider how many “pieces” of God’s heart there are in the universe. The more I thought about this, the more I began to realize the vast implications of a very simple statement found in God’s word.

My number of “heart pieces” doesn’t begin to compare with God’s, yet every time I develop a loving relationship with someone, my heart expands to include them. Due to the one Biblical statement I mentioned, God’s heart doesn’t have to expand to include anyone. He already loves them. You see …

“God is love.” 1 John 4:8
