Psalm 36

1. Verses 1-4 sound much like some things written in the book of Proverbs. These verses read much like statements of fact that are, in truth, sending a warning to one who is beginning to turn from God. When we see some of the things in these verses happening to us, we need to be extra careful that we do not fall any further into temptation.

2. In contrast to the confining nature of temptation and evil, God’s lovingkindness “extends to the heavens” and His “faithfulness reaches to the skies” (verse 5).

3. Verses 5-9 give us more words of praise about God. The verses seem to overflow with words of glory.

4. The end of verse 7 gives us a great reason to praise God: His protection. While this is a consistent theme of the Psalms, it is good to continue to point it out. In our society, many are looking for ways to be protected. In reality, God is the only true Protector. “The children of man take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.”

5. Verse 8 mentions how abundant God’s blessings are. When we have partaken as much as we can, and are full, there are still more blessings for God to give! He is just that bountiful.

6. The final 3 verses (10-12) are a prayer for God to continue to bless His people.

7. Verse 11 contains a petition that we may need to make: “Let not the foot of pride come upon me.” While I do not fully understand the import of this statement, we need often to pray for humility.
