Seeing What We Focus On

Have you ever noticed that, when you buy a certain type of vehicle, you start to see every other vehicle on the road that looks like yours? You might even mention it to your family and friends with phrases like, “I saw our car coming home today!” (Wah, wah, wah)

The same is true of TV shows and music. If we have heard a particular song on the radio earlier in the day, and then it’s used in a show or commercial, our ears perk up and we notice it more clearly.

I’m currently preaching a series that deals with the Christian home, and I was also asked recently to help with premarital counseling for one couple and to perform the marriage of another. It seems as though, when I read blogs, articles, webpages and other material, that nearly every other article is something about the home.

Why is that? It’s because we are focused on that subject forĀ a short time. It is “fresh” in our minds, so we are more ready to see it elsewhere.

I want to encourage you to do the same with God’s Word. If we were to place the text of a speech that contained several references to the Bible in this post, would you notice those references? We might not catch every one of them, but would we even notice a majority?

It’s amazing how many references to God’s Word are found in our everyday lives. From songs on the radio to speeches, from movie lines to billboards, from everyday phrases to the storylines for plays. The Bible, though many are trying to take it out of public life, is all around us.

Do we notice? We “see” what we are focused on. Are you focused on God’s Word?

I find myself reading my “favorite” scriptures again and again. This year, I want to focus on reading the scriptures that are obscure to me, not just the ones that I like to read. I hope I’ll be able to uncover some new messages from God in this way. It amazes me that each time I pick up the Bible, I find something new or a new perspective on an old favorite. Thanks for reminding us of where our focus should be.

Thanks, Adam, for the good thoughts. I need to focus more and more on God’s word as the days go by. It is a comfort to me when I allow my mind to do just that – focus on God and His Word.
