Simplicity (Bulletin article for August 13)

Our new members dinner was a true joy to attend. As brother Andy said, we should have been doing these types of dinners long ago. That being said, our first one was wonderful. So many stayed and brought food. We enjoyed a great period of fellowship. It was uplifting to see so many new members sitting at the head tables.

When the evening was over, a lot of things stuck out. One of those things was the beauty of the simplicity of the dinner. There were no fancy decorations. There weren’t any expensive awards. It was nice to have the new converts sitting at one table and simply having them stand to be recognized.

Sometimes doing things in a simple way is the best way. We don’t always have to go “over the top” in order for something to be a success.

I remember an NBA All-Star Game several years ago where the “50 Greatest Players” were announced. Instead of a lot of fanfare, the players simply stood on a platform wearing leather jackets and stepped forward with a wave when their name was called. No fireworks. No loud, blaring music. Why? Because the focus could then be on those being honored.

Simplicity can be quite appealing. One of the things that makes God’s plan to redeem man amazing is how simple it is. Sadly, many have tried to complicate the plan or have even come up with an “alternative.” How tragic!

In First Corinthians 14:33 Paul tells us that “God is not the author of confusion.” It should not surprise us, then, that His plan—the only plan—is very simple. What is it?

  • Hear the Gospel (Romans 10:14).
  • Believe the Gospel (Mark 16:16).
  • Repent [turn away] from sin (Acts 2:38; Luke 13:3).
  • Confess before men that Jesus is the Son of God (Matthew 10:32).
  • Be baptized [immersed] in water for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38).

Sunday night, Trey Williams joined the millions who have followed this simple, God-given plan in order to become a Christian.

Have you followed God’s simple plan? If you have not, “why do you tarry?”
