A Thing about Things
Last night, I included this in my sermon, and a few folks said they liked it, so I thought I’d share it with you. It’s just a short paragraph I wrote about how we define ourselves by the things we have in this life. Enjoy! We like our things. Our shiny things, our glittering things, our flickering things, our quiet things, our gimmicky things. We drive things with nice things on the wheels and great things to play music for our drive. We have things on our walls and things on our floors and things in our attics and things on our doors. We put things in the garage and…

Friday Links Roundup: Tea Party Edition
No, not the election season tea party. Mary Carol turned five yesterday and her “big” present was what she calls her “tea party table.” She also got some dishes and cups (thanks to Grammy and Grampy), so she held a marathon tea party yesterday. It is hard to believe that it’s been five years since we adopted Mary Carol. The way God brought her into our lives is one of the most amazing things we have ever experienced, and we are grateful every day for His working in our lives. Here’s our adopted treasure opening a present yesterday. ———————- On to the links for this week: 1. Any reminder I…

Friday Links Roundup: The REAL Game on Saturday
Did you know there are football games tomorrow? I know, with the lack of media coverage, it would be easy to miss that Florida and Alabama play tomorrow. I hope that wasn’t a shock to you. However, we know that one of those teams will play for the BCS national championship. So, why watch? There’s no drama there. The REAL game is between Texas and Nebraska! If the Cornhuskers pull a major upset, they will earn a BCS bid and quite possibly open the door for TCU to play for a national title. Now THAT’S worth watching!!! On to the links for this week: 1. I often speak about the…

Guest Post: The Church and Money
[Today’s post is the 8th in our continuing “The Church and…” series. It is written by Craig Ford, who is a missionary in Papua New Guinea. Craig is one of the writers at the blog Money Help for Christians. You can subscribe to the blog’s RSS feed here. We are grateful for Craig’s insight into this topic, and for taking time to write for us.] I grew up believing that discussions about money carried a certain amount of ‘unholiness’. Those who are truly spiritual elevate themselves above such petty issues and instead focus on more important discussions of salvation, baptism, heaven, and hell. I assumed that the truly holy are…

Friday Links Roundup: Great Piece of Mail Edition
I check the mail every day. (Yes, I am a creature of habit, and I’m proud of it.). We don’t get a ton of mail. We get about 7 church bulletins each week, as well as a couple of magazines each month. Of course, we get our bills (yuck), but that’s about it. It’s always encouraging to get a card or note, and those come from time-to-time. Yesterday, though, we got a piece of mail that we are considering scanning in and keeping forever. It was a letter from our insurance company. It stated that they had reviewed our claim (again, for the fourth time), and were siding in our…

Friday Links Roundup: Many Limbs Edition
We are in Alabama today, helping Leah’s parents clean up their yard. Earlier this year, their “neck of the woods” was hit by some very strong storms that left a large number of limbs and branches down in their yard. We are helping them clean up their yard as much as we can in a couple of days. We are looking forward to getting back to Lebanon Road for worship on Sunday. We have to say “goodbye” to Chris LaFever this Sunday. He has served as our summer youth intern and has done a very good work. We know he will do well in his future, but we hate to see…
