The Lord’s Survival Kit

December 25th is a day where gifts will be expected. Just as Valentine’s Day is a prescribed day where men are supposed to do something nice for their ladies, Christmas comes with certain tags. But sometimes the best gifts and the brightest blessings come from out of nowhere and are received at a time and through a source that is not anticipated.

A few weeks ago I had a small white paper sack dropped off to my office. It was delivered by a local Christian school. The students were making care packages with the theme being, “Preacher Appreciation.” Inside the sack was a bottle of water, and bag of microwavable popcorn, and a sealed clear plastic bag with a piece a paper attached to it that said, “The Lord’s Survival Kit.” Along with the items in the kit, came the following explanation:

  • A toothpick – to remind you to pick out the good qualities of others (Matt. 7:1).
  • A rubber band – to remind you to be flexible. Things might not always go the way you want, but it will work out (Rom.8:28).
  • A band aid – to remind you to heal hurt feelings – yours or someone else’s (Col. 3:12-14).
  • A pencil – to remind you to list your blessings everyday (Eph. 1:3).
  • An eraser – to remind you that everyone makes mistakes and it’s okay (Gen. 50:15-21).
  • A stick of chewing gum – to remind you to stick with it and you can accomplish anything (Phil. 4:13)
  • A mint – to remind you are worth a mint (John 3:16-17).
  • A candy kiss – to remind you that everyone needs a kiss or a hug everyday (John 4:7).
  • A tea bag – to remind you to relax daily and go over your list of blessings (1 Thess. 5:18).

Living a life that is pleasing to the Master is not super complicated. It just involves doing extraordinary things with ordinary tools. I don’t think I will ever look at the items in my survival kit in the way I did before.

You may have some ordinary things in your life that may not seem special. But don’t underestimate what God can do with them. God took some common household items and used the heart of child to make this preacher’s day and encourage him to keep on going. What can He do with you?
