The Most Frightening Statistic of All
We live in the information age, but it also seems that we live in the age of polls and surveys. Constantly, we are deluged with information telling us what percentage of people do this or how many folks believe that. It is virtually impossible to keep up with all of these results.
This article is not meant to say that these surveys and studies have no value. They certainly have their place and they are very helpful. However, with the seeming avalanche at which all these numbers come at us, it can be so overwhelming that we struggle make sense of it all.
If we are honest, so many of the results can give us pause, and rightfully so. It seems that so many of the numbers we have reported to us show us a decline in belief in God or
But there is one statistic that does not need any research house or polling place to be conducted, the results of which should be the most frightening of all.
There is no margin of error, because the results are 100% accurate. And the results are true in every culture, socio-economic status, race, and any other difference we might bring to mind.
The statistic is this: 100% of people who die without following Jesus are eternally lost.
It’s not just that some find Jesus and are fine. Some will even call Him “Lord” on the Day of Judgment and be lost, because they weren’t following Him (cf. Matthew 7:21).
Others will be religious and will have a good motive, but will have put the traditions of men or their own feelings above what the Lord actually taught, and, so, will be guilty of not following those things that will judge them (cf. John 12:48).
And millions more will never have heard of Jesus, or will have simply chosen willfully not to follow Him, and they will have His vengeance taken upon them (cf. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8).
This realization should cause me to have to very important reactions.
First, it should cause me to make sure that I am following the Lord, not just claiming that I am following Him. It should cause me to dig into the Word of God regularly and deeply to make certain that I am doing what He says, not just what I feel might be right or what someone with influence tells me is right.
But also, it should cause me to want to tell anyone and everyone about Jesus, and about what He teaches. It should cause me to avoid cowering in fear because something that Jesus taught might go against what they already believe or what society states is “good” or “right.” Instead, we need to call what God says good as good and what God says is evil as evil.
There is no person that we should hate so badly that we would avoid telling them about what Jesus said.
Or, to put it another way, there is no person we should want to be lost to the most frightening of all statistics.
Because the other side is also true: 100% of people who follow Jesus will be saved forever. Wouldn’t you like to have a small hand in helping others be part of that number? Then let’s get to the work!
