Recenter

It is definitely time for spring break. This has been a hard couple of weeks at the school. At the end of an irregular 9 weeks, disrupted by flooding and frigid temperatures, everyone is ready for a break. But I had a moment with a student last week that helped recenter me.

I knew this young man had been struggling for a couple of days but I couldn’t get through to him to figure out why. Finally, we had a break through. I looked over and big tear drops were splashing on the table. I took him to a quiet space and he finally admitted that he was nervous. When I asked why, he said, “I can’t do all this stuff and everybody else can.”

I’m happy to report that after a jumping lesson where he helped me jump farther than I can on my own, he was happier and ready to go back to work. But the real lesson was for me. That few minutes reminded me that my job at school is to help those students and meet their needs to the best of my ability.

As I consider that in the bigger scope of life, I realize that it is always my job as a Christian to keep my focus on those around me … the people and what they need, not the circumstances that can change at any moment. To help us all recenter, please consider the following two verses:

Ephesians 2:10

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Matthew 20:27-28

“And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
