The Most Important Vote Anyone Made on Tuesday

Before getting to my point, let me start with two things that today’s article is not meant to say.

First, this post is not meant to say that politics are not important. They absolutely are. And I am a political nerd. I am very quiet about who I vote for, but I love the ins and outs of elections, even going so far as to think about how people in counties in other states will vote.

Second, this post is not meant to be some holier-than-thou over-spiritualization type article. Instead, it is meant to cause us all to think about one simple thing. I hope it is read with that in mind.

With those things said, here goes…

I’m writing this well before we know who won any race for a governorship, senate seat, the house of representatives, or any state or local election. But I still know that what I am writing is true.

Maybe the person you voted for a senate seat won and you are thrilled. That’s great and exciting. Maybe the person you voted for a school board seat is a friend and you are excited for their victory and for the simple fact that you got to vote for a friend. That is wonderful.

But what I’m talking about was not a vote for a governor or for a small-town alderman. The most important vote anyone made yesterday was not on any ballot. You couldn’t punch a ticket, fill in a box, or pull a lever to make this vote.

Additionally, you won’t wait two, four, or six years to make this vote again. Instead, you made this vote again this very morning. And you will make this vote again tomorrow.

(But, don’t worry, you don’t have to sit through interminable TV ads to try to get you to cast your ballot!)

The most important vote anyone cast on Tuesday was a vote to follow Jesus.

The most important vote you will make today is the same one.

The most important vote you will make tomorrow will be the same one.

As the old song asks, “Are you walking daily by the Savior’s side?” More importantly, as Jesus stated, we are to take up our cross daily.

You have a vote. There is no absentee ballot involved. There is no delay in counting involved. It is simply a “yes” or a “no” vote, and you must make that vote each day.

But, each day, it is the most important vote anyone will ever make.
