The Power of Music
Some of you reading this know that my life has been consumed with a theater production lately, as my daughter has been Maria in “The Sound of Music.” Although that has been an amazing experience and is related to the catalyst for this article [read exhaustion], it is not the inspiration.
Last week, the only time I could fit my monthly hair appointment in was at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. For those of you who know me, you know this was truly a sacrifice. I don’t give up my Saturday mornings for very many things … especially to be somewhere by 7:00. That morning, as I was driving, some songs came on in my car that totally changed my mood. If you asked me now what they were, I could not tell you, but I was struck by the power of music.
Music has the power to help us learn, to crystalize a memory, to change our mood, and to express some of our deepest emotions. Perhaps that is one reason the book of Psalms is so loved. In it, there are songs expressing fear, joy, sadness, and hope. How thankful I am to God for the gift of music!
Friend, if you need to change your mood today, might I suggest the power of music. I’ll go farther and suggest a specific song that always uplifts my heart:
Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
~Psalm 95:1-5
