Thinking about the Present

At the recent Lads to Leaders convention, it was a joy to hear so many good speeches. Each was challenging and engaging in their own way, and I feel encouraged by the things I heard.

During the Sunday morning worship, one of the young men was speaking and had been asked to extend the Lord’s invitation at the conclusion of his lesson. As he did, he said something that stuck out to me and has caused me to do some reflection.

He reminded us of the plan of salvation (hear, believe, repent, confess, be baptized) and of the opportunity to respond as a Christian if we were in need of prayers for forgiveness or encouragement.

Then this young man said something like this: “If you want to take advantage of the powerful opportunity of the present…” and then extended the invitation to respond.

The powerful opportunity of the present.

That’s a potent line, isn’t it?

We all know that the Bible warns us against taking too much pride in the future. We all will talk about making opportunities now because we are not promised tomorrow.

But to consider the present a “powerful opportunity?” That filled my mind with encouragement to not only seize the moment, but to realize the potential in each moment.

Each moment is an opportunity to do good…or evil.

Each moment is an opportunity to encourage…or discourage.

Each moment is an opportunity to draw closer to God…or to let my relationship with Him wane.

Each moment is an opportunity to become more like Christ…or less like Him.

I think that young man had it right. Whether it is at a time when the Lord’s invitation is being extended or just a random Wednesday morning when you stumble across a blog article, the present is a powerful opportunity.

How are you using this very moment?
