Why Do You Seek Me?

In a recent Bible trivia game, one of the questions asked about the historical significance of the words found in Luke 2:49a. Depending on the version you read, here is what that says:

“And he said unto them, ‘How is it that ye sought me?’” (KJV)

“And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me?” (NKJV)

“’Why were you searching for me?’ he asked.” (NIV)

The answer the game was seeking is that these are the first recorded spoken words of Jesus in the flesh. What a concept! Even the simple words He spoke to His parents as they sought Him after they left Him behind in Jerusalem can give us much to consider.

Why do we seek Him?

Do we seek Him for a sign as the “evil and adulterous generation” in Matthew 12:39?

Do we seek Him because we are curious like Herod in Luke 9?

Some might seek Him to catch Him is a seeming mistake so that they can feel better about their unbelief like the Pharisees in Luke 11.

Perhaps you are seeking Him like the disciples of John 1:38, seeking a teacher, someone to follow and build your life around.

My friend, if you are seeking Him, know that He wants to be found. He invites us to follow Him (Matthew 11:28-30). He tells us that, in searching the Scriptures for eternal life, we will find Him (John 5:39). It is natural that we should seek Him, for it is in Him that “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 11:28). And no matter the reason for your searching, His truth will shine through.

If you are seeking Him and would like to talk to someone about it, please contact us here at the blog. We would love to seek Him with you. If you are in Cookeville, come see us at Willow Avenue. If you are around Paducah, the folks at Central would be glad to see you. Whatever the reason you seek Him, know that He can be found. In fact, take another look at Luke 2 and you might get an idea of where to look for Him.

“And he said to them, ‘Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?’” Luke 2:49
