You Won’t Find It On HGTV
There is an automobile dealer in our area that informs people on radio commercials that, if you buy a car or truck from him, you’ll get a warranty “forever.” He then adds, “and that’s a very long time.” Indeed it is!
Most of us have heard the word “forever” used when people try to describe a very long time. You know what I’m talking about – “I stood in line forever at Walmart” – or – “It took forever to get to grandma’s house”- or some similar expression.
Lately, I’ve been hearing that word used in another sense. As some of you know, I (to put it kindly) tolerate HGTV. I don’t care much for that network, but Donna does, so I watch people do in thirty minutes what it takes us mere mortals weeks or months to do. I figure that is the least I can do since she tolerates my watching the St. Louis Cardinals and maybe another sporting event or two. I’m sure that she is as interested in some of the strategy involved in a baseball game as I am in shiplap!
It seems that I’m hearing “forever” used a little more recently on HGTV than has been the case in the past. People are buying or remodeling houses and trying to make sure that those houses are just what they want because, as they express it, this will be their forever home.
Both the car dealer and the people on HGTV seem to be using “forever” to mean “as long as I/we live.” The truth of the matter is that those two things are not synonymous. When Jesus spoke of a man identified as “a certain rich man” and another man named Lazarus (Luke 16), they had both ceased to live on the earth. In spite of that, they still had their identity and were conscious.
It might be wise to remember that as we go through our lives on the earth. Our existence does not end when we stop breathing or our heart stops beating.
It might also be wise to remember that God has, indeed, provided a forever home for those who are faithful to Him. You won’t find it on HGTV, though.
When Jesus was talking to His apostles not long before He went to the cross, He told them about their forever home. Other passages in the Bible give others who are faithful to Him the same assurance He gave them.
Without citing multiple passages about the true forever home, I will just ask all of us to consider those well-known words of Jesus recorded in John 14:1-3:
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
