Church Life

10 Years Later

We have been at it for a little over ten years.  Faithfully, every Tuesday afternoon at 1:00, a group of ladies of various ages meet in the large classroom at the Central Church of Christ to study the Bible.

I’m sure there are a lot of you reading this who are now thinking – “so what, we do the same thing, just at a different time on a different day.”  I’m sure that’s true, and I am certainly not trying to say that our class is more beneficial that yours.  I’m writing this post hoping that it will encourage many more to just study the Bible.

After taking about six weeks to teach each lady how we came to have the Book in front of us and overview its various sections (and believe me, there are many people who don’t know this), we began working our way through this wonderful Book that is our guide for life.  I have learned more from this deep study over the course of the last 10 years than I had in all of my other years combined.

I want to share with you what makes this class so special to me.

  • The subject matter

I grew up going to Bible class at church on a regular basis, but I did not grow up in a home that included nightly devotionals or even the telling of accounts from the Bible.  My knowledge of the Bible was limited and it wasn’t until years later when I was married and began trying to teach my husband the gospel that I truly understood the importance of knowing what the Bible says. I’m pleased to say that he was converted, but it wasn’t necessarily because I knew so much about all of the Bible. It was, however, a process of looking together for answers in the Bible.

While our ladies’ class could study any number of topics or books written by other people, we have chosen to only study the Bible – and to study it deeply. It has the subject matter that will lead you through this life and eternal life.

  • The ladies who attend regularly

Some of these ladies have attended for all ten-plus years, and some have joined us along the way. I love these sisters with whom I worship on a regular basis. I also love the sisters who come from other congregations to study with us. We share a common bond of faith in Jesus Christ and a desire to truly understand God’s word. I cannot begin to tell you the amount of spiritual growth that has taken place over the course of the last ten years. Our class is described by many as the best thing that has happened in our educational program. The women at Central are a great example of “hungering and thirsting for righteousness.”

  • The future benefits

Since we have a variety of ages of ladies who attend, I am encouraged by the younger women who come. Knowing that they are learning in-depth what God has given us as a guide in life is so important to me. Those who, at a younger age, gain an understanding of God’s word are bound to be more faithful themselves and to instill in their children the importance of knowing the Bible.

I know it is difficult for younger women to come, often because of work schedules. For those who can’t come, we offer a Bible class for women on Wednesday night. And guess what we study – the Bible! We have a large number of young mothers who attend this class regularly. The future looks bright when so many are learning God’s word in depth.

I hope that these thoughts of mine will possibly help you in your desire to help other ladies see the importance of studying God’s word. Even if you can’t get a class of women going, hopefully it will inspire you to begin a study of your own.  I know that your life will be made better if you do.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”  Psalm 119:105
