A Short Reminder for Father’s Day
I remember hearing or reading on one occasion that Father’s Day is just Like Mother’s Day except for the fact that fathers don’t get nearly as many presents as mothers. If that is true, maybe the title of this post should be “A Reminder that Sunday is Father’s Day.” Maybe that would have reminded/encouraged some people to buy something before next Sunday (if you are reading this when it is scheduled to be posted).
Fathers come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. They speak different languages and dialects, live in a variety of places, and have varying backgrounds. Each has his own unique interests, talents, etc. They don’t all like the same food, have the same interests, occupations, or hobbies. They are even referred to in different ways; father, dad, daddy, pop, etc.
A father seems to constantly be trying to juggle responsibilities, expectations, and or desires of a wife, children (and maybe grandchildren), other relatives, an employer (or employees), the community in which he lives, society, friends, and a whole laundry list of other concerns.
Maybe, as we prepare for a day during which fathers are to be at least remembered, it would be good to remind ourselves of something that God says about the role of a father. As is always the case, nobody will ever “fully measure up” in every aspect of this at all times.
With that being said, I thought that this might encourage some fathers, challenge some others, and give some children an appreciation for those fathers who are trying to please the heavenly Father. All who are fathers would do well to remember what the most important God-given task is.
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger,
but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
(Eph. 6:4, ESV)
