Who Are the Best Singers?
The thoughts below are over sixteen years old. I recently found them in some older material I was going through. I think that they are just as worthy of our consideration now as they were when they were originally penned. I am indebted to brother Dan Jenkins for what I think are some very insightful observations. Please read them carefully and prayerfully. I am aware of the fact that some who may regularly read these posts are accustomed to having choirs, choruses, praise teams, etc. where they worship. For that reason, they may not understand the concern expressed by brother Jenkins. The reason for his concern (and mine) is that we find any authority…

Parenting 101
It has been many years since I was at the height of parenting. As most of you know, our children are grown, married, and have children of their own. They lead busy lives caring for and teaching those children. When you are going through all of the daily care and disciplining (teaching) of your children, it may seem like it will never end. They will never learn how to do things on their own. They will never be able to feed, clothe, and sustain themselves. And then it happens…they are grown and out on their own. It dawns upon you that eighteen years of time to train your children, which seemed so long in the…

The Goal of Christian Parenting in One Statement
It is not easy to be a parent, and it seems to be more and more difficult to be a Christian parent each day. As our society drifts further away from Biblical principles and purity, instilling those things in our children only becomes more against the grain. But have you ever thought that the entire goal of being a Christian parent can be summarized in just one statement? That said, it is a statement that every Christian dad and mom need to have in mind with every decision they make. It is a statement you emphasize when you tell your child that they will not dress like everyone else, but…

“In a Little While…”
How many times when we were children did we ask our parents when something was going to happen or be over with? “How much longer until we get to grandma and papa’s house?” “How much longer until we eat?” “How much longer do we have to sit here?” “How much longer until we leave?” How much longer do we have to stay at this place?” And we can just hear our mother or father answer back, “Not too much longer. It will all be over in a little while.” As human beings, we are constantly moving to and planning the next thing. We are impatient and we don’t like waiting.…

A New Chapter for A Legacy of Faith
I don’t know when these words will appear on the website. I’m not even sure they will appear. I’m not the one responsible for starting the website, nor am the one who schedules when various posts appear. As many of you know, the man behind A Legacy of Faith is our son, Adam Faughn. He will be the one to decide when (or if) you ever read these words. All I know is that they are being written on July 1, 2018. In fact, they are being written fairly early in the morning. I had a little trouble sleeping, so I thought I’d try to share some of my thoughts on this day. This day may…

Who is the Greatest?
A little over a year ago, I published my first online post. Until very recently, I had not had any kind of social media (are we sure this guy is 17?), so until last year, I had never put anything of mine on the internet. Last June, though, I decided to make my first post. It was an article, like this one, and at the time I wrote it, I thought I was the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time – there’s the youth lingo). Since then, I have been taught that I was and am not. I already knew that, but events in my life in the past few months…

A Christian View of Earthly Citizenship
Paul famously wrote that, for the Christian, “our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20). Due to that statement, some Christians struggle with days like today, where our nation celebrates a national holiday. May Christians participate in these patriotic acts? The answer is found in the concept of balance. First of all, I would suggest that Christians need to keep their priorities in check. In other words, it is possible for a nation–or, to word it another way, civic pride–to become an idol. If I am more proud to be an American (or a citizen of any nation on earth) than I am of being a Christian, then I have a…

Do Churches have the Right to Discipline Each Other?
I entitled this article with the intention of getting the highest volume of readers possible. I wanted it to be an open question that was balanced and that did not from the get-go seem to be slanted in any direction whatsoever. Because this is what I want to consider – should we be policing or should we be preaching? From a congregational standpoint, God organized individual autonomous congregations to have elders who would shepherd their own flocks. Church discipline was never practiced arbitrarily but only according to the doctrine that was communicated by the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. In other words, there are divine directives for how and…

Who Has a Dress Code on Sunday (and Every Other Day)?
I have no trouble imagining the outcry if the following “rules” or “dress code” would appear in the bulletin of some church and/or was read by one of the elders of a congregation. I can imagine that some people would actually leave that congregation in search of an atmosphere that would be much more accepting and less restrictive. Racerback with a mock or regular collar are allowed (no collar = no racerback). Plunging necklines are NOT allowed. Leggings, unless under a skort or shorts, are NOT allowed. Length of skirt, skort, and shorts MUST be long enough to not see your bottom area (even if covered by under shorts) at any time, standing or bent…
