The FCC, Nudity, Extreme Profanity, and Your TV
For years, some have tried to point out the declining morals we see and hear in our mainstream media. It is something I have preached very passionately about, partly because, well, I like to be entertained, so it is a struggle. But I also preach passionately about this issue because so many Christians seemingly do not care what comes across their iPod or TV screen. The latest word from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), though, should open our eyes. Parents, are you ready for your children to see full frontal female nudity at any time during the day on your TV in your living room? If the latest consideration from…

A Money Show You Might Like
Today’s post is a quick link, but one I think you might like. I was recently asked to be a guest on an internet radio program called “Surviving the Credit Crisis.” The program deals with helping people who are struggling with the new world of real estate, and is hosted by Karen Simpson-Hankins. She does a great job as a host, and I enjoyed the time on the program. She asked me to be a guest, talking about how to save up for home repairs and maintenance, a topic I had written on recently at ChristianPF.com. The program went live this morning. If this is a topic that you are…

God’s People are the Best Critics
Um, wow. That’s pretty much all I can say about yesterday’s day on the blog. More people read yesterday’s post, “A Personal Letter to My Homosexual Friends,” than had ever been to our blog in a single day total! For our little corner of the Internet, it was a truly amazing day, and it has spilled over into today. We are humbled when we have a “spike” in traffic like this, and all we can say is “thank you,” because we know it is your likes, tweets, and other interaction that cause this to happen. So, “thank you.” On a day like that, however, I am reminded of several things.…

A Personal Letter to My Homosexual Friends
Dear Friend, Aren’t we living in a confusing time? As I study history, though, I see that nations and peoples are seemingly always confused about many issues, ranging from the very unimportant to things that are cultural-shakers. I am writing to you today about something that, as I see it, is the latter. Part of the confusion of our times is in dealing with homosexuality. Should it be accepted? Sanctioned? Shouted down? Is it even an issue any longer? This is a conversation that has been a long time coming, but has truly exploded in the last couple of years or so. In some ways, that is a good thing,…

Count Your Many Blessings: 100 Reasons I’m Thankful
The old hymn says, “Count your many blessings, name them one by one…and it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.” So, today I’m doing just that. I hope this list encourages you to be more grateful. I’m thankful for… 1. God’s love for me in spite of myself. 2. Jesus taking my place on Calvary. 3. God creating such a beautiful world. 4. Leah, and how she reminds me constantly of the virtuous woman. 5. Marriage and the picture of Jesus and His Bride. 6. How God somehow brought Mary Carol into our lives by adoption. 7. How Mary Carol’s story reminds me that I’m adopted into God’s…

Updates and Pictures of the Kids
We have update posts every so often, and I know many of you don’t like them all that much. So, if you will work your way through these updates today, you will be rewarded with pictures of our awesome kids. (Yes, that is shameless bribery!) First, my friend Michael Whitworth is a new daddy, and he wants to spend time with his newborn son Daniel instead of writing blog posts (what a novel idea). So, he asked 30 of his friends to write posts on their favorite passage from Proverbs. It was my privilege to write one of the posts, and mine is the first to be published. I highly…

The Intentionally Empty Church Building
An Associated Press story begins with this report of a Belgian church-building-of-sorts: The church is made of rusty steel beams separated by gaps, and its austere beauty won it an international prize. Yet the eerie desolation of the see-through art installation has also turned into a reflection on the state of Roman Catholicism on a religion-weary continent where real churches, like the dozen dotting the hills of this verdant area, increasingly lose their flock and function. The article goes on to talk about how it is not on Roman Catholicism that is struggling on the European continent. They speak of how many churches turned to adding restaurants, coffee shops, and…

Book Review: The Language of Blessing
Joseph Cavanaugh’s first book is a very encouraging look at how we speak into the lives of people we know and how that changes them. What is most interesting about this book to me, however, is that Cavanaugh spends quite a lot of time reminding us to speak into our own lives, not just the lives of other people. If we are not speaking blessing into our own lives, we will not be sharing blessings with others. The book is highly personal, which I like. The author is able to share times when he has both struggled to overcome negativity and when he has seen how speaking blessing into others…
