Looking Forward to FHU
Next week is the annual Freed-Hardeman University Bible lectureship. Each year, we head to Henderson, Tennessee to learn more about the Bible and to see brothers and sisters from all over the world. While it is a tiring week, it is one of the highlights of our year. This year, the books to be discussed are Judges and Ruth. Considering the moral decline in our nation, I think these are fitting books. This nation seems to be forgetting to call out to God, but there are quite a few people like Ruth and Boaz, too; people who stand out as a shining light in an ever-darkening world. We always look…

“This Week at Lebanon Road” [Video]
For some time, we have wanted to use the Lebanon Road website–which is great!–in new ways. Today, JD Buckner and I recorded the first weekly video called “This Week at Lebanon Road.” We will not publish all of these on our blog, but we wanted you to know about it, so we are going to put this one here. If you would like to follow these videos, you can go back to the Lebanon Road site each week, or subscribe the YouTube channel. Enjoy!

Will the NFL Cease to Exist?
In an interview this week, Baltimore Ravens safety Bernard Pollard made a very provocative statement. Pollard, who is known for very hard hits, stated that, in his opinion, the NFL would cease to exist within 30 years. I have to say that I have seen plenty of coverage of this story that failed to mention the part of his quote where he stated that this was just his opinion. Still, the reason he said this is more important. He basically said that there are too many rules being changed that have taken away the physicality of the sport and that fans would eventually get tired of watching it. So why…

MailChimp and Ministry
Last Friday, we posted about blogging for beginners, and we got quite a bit of positive feedback. In that post, we listed several resources that bloggers should at least consider. One of those resources was MailChimp. Today, we want to talk about this resource, but for more than just blogging. I really think there are several ministry-related uses for this resource. First, though, what is MailChimp? To state it simply, MailChimp is an email client. It helps you create custom emails that are very pleasing on the eye. Further, MailChimp lets you build lists, so you don’t have to manage who gets the emails and who doesn’t. People opt in…

Book Review: 20,000 Days and Counting
Subtitled The Crash Course For Mastering Your Life Right Now, this book is a quick read that will cause you to think. In fact, since the book is about making the best use of your time, the writer, Robert D. Smith, wanted the book to be quite brief. The volume can be read quite thoughtfully in less than two hours. Coming to the realization that he had lived nearly 20,000 days, Smith went on a retreat by himself and tried to think about, if he had 20,000 days left, what would he most like to accomplish? In reality, answering that question did not take long, because he knew what his most…

I Serve a Very ‘Particular’ God
Political correctness drives me crazy. I am not one who wishes to offend people just for the sake of being offensive, but we have taken the concept of “being P.C.” so far that it becomes ludicrous. Sometimes, it is more than just bizarre, though. Sometimes, people get to politically correct that they end up being offensive in their attempt to avoid being offensive. Who are usually the offended in these situations? Christians, of course. Such was the case during the 2013 Post-Inaugural luncheon, when “Reverend” Luis Cortes ended his prayer. These were his closing words: We have all joined in this prayer in our particular god’s name, and I in…

President Obama’s Forgotten “S”
Yesterday, with all the usual pomp, Barak Obama was ceremonially sworn in for his second term as President of the United States. I say “ceremonially” because he was officially sworn in on Sunday, per the Constitutional provision that a President must be sworn in before noon on January 20. His speech was quite brief, not even reaching 20 minutes in length. However, it made headlines around the world for several things that were said. None hit me so hard, though, as his three “s’s” of civil rights. He stated, We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths — that all of us are created equal — is…

Stop the Conscience Triangle from Turning
Some Native American groups had a very interesting way of instilling their young people with the idea of what we call the conscience. They stated that there was a triangle within one’s chest. When he/she did something that was wrong, the triangle would turn once, cutting the heart. When that person did something else wrong, it would turn again, and the point of the triangle would cut the heart again. However, they also taught that, over time, one could do so many things that were wrong that the triangle could turn and turn, but it would no longer hurt the heart, because it was now calloused. What a wonderful way…
