Friday Links Roundup: Just the Links Edition
We are truly enjoying our time in Kentucky for the Christmas holiday. We have opened presents, and seen the stuff Santa left the kids. We’ve visited my grandmother and we sang at her assisted living home. Most of all, we are enjoying time with family…which is why there isn’t much “intro” to this post! On to the links….. 1. One of the Old Testament books I find most fascinating is Habakkuk. I don’t know as much about this book as I’d like, but I hope to appreciate it more in the future. David Mathis writes of the change in the prophet on Desiring God’s blog. 2. One of the difficulties…

A Seasonal Reminder
Lord willing, we are leaving after our midweek services tonight to drive to Paducah for a holiday. We’ll enjoy Christmas with my parents, grandmother, sister and her family, and my family. I’m grateful that we are a close family. I’m also so thankful that we are able to be together on holidays (and other times, too). There are thousands of children who will not get to see a mom or dad on Christmas this year. While it was to be expected, I was somewhat upset that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were basically turned into nothing more than a political ploy (by both parties) this past year. In all…

Book Review: David: The Man Who Had the Heart to be King
This is a book I have taken my time in reading. It is longer than many books I read (over 580 pages), but it is also very good. David is the lecture book from the 2008 Power Lectures, held in Southaven, Mississippi. Each of the lectures, as you can guess, is based upon a scene from David’s life, or a relationship he had with another (Bathsheba, Saul, Solomon, etc.). One of the interesting features of this book is that it is not in chronological order. Instead, the lectures are grouped together by subject (David as king, shepherd, servant, etc.). This takes a little getting used to, but makes for good…

Lebanon Road Report: December 21
Brrrrrr! That’s what everyone was saying as they entered the church building yesterday. For those who don’t live in the South, you don’t know how weird our weather has been lately. Around 5PM on Saturday, the temperature at our house was around 57. It was breezy and cool, but quite nice. By 5PM on Sunday…it was around 20! This morning when I woke up, it was 9 degrees. We are blessed to have a nice, warm building in which to worship God and have our Bible classes. We had several families away on Christmas holiday, and others were ill, but we were still blessed with a wonderful day at Lebanon…

Friday Links Roundup: Day Early for Travel Edition
It’s holiday travel season. We begin “making the rounds” this afternoon, as we are headed to Olive Branch, Mississippi. Leah’s sister and brother-in-law live there, and her family are all coming to exchange gifts and enjoy some time together. We’ll return on Saturday. On Tuesday night, Leah and I went visiting, but I also surprised her. A couple of daring guys (JD and Shea) came to the house and watched the kids for a couple of hours while we were away. After visiting, I took Leah to the Opryland Hotel to see the Christmas lights. They were truly amazing. While my phone doesn’t take very good pictures, you “get the…

Just for Laughs
In case you missed it last night, Cleveland State upset #11 Syracuse on the ‘Cuse’s home floor. The way they won is the great part. A player for CSU nailed a 60-foot bank shot as the buzzer sounded. It was his first three-pointer of the game. In case you didn’t see it, here’s the shot: Now, as if that didn’t get under Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim’s skin enough, he had a little trouble with the microphone at the post-game press conference. Considering how his team lost, I think he handled the microphone quite well. Enjoy: I’m thankful that there are members at Lebanon Road who make sure these things don’t…

A Book Update
Recently, I posted an article that was inspired by an email I received from my friend Wes Hazel. In that post, I asked for “top 10” lists of books. [To read the original post, click here. There are three lists in the comments so far.] I’m posting this for two reasons: 1. To remind you to post your “favorites” list either in the comments or send them to me via email: adfaughn@gmail.com 2. To post a list that was sent to me. Neal Mathis, who works in Henderson, Kentucky, sent me a shorter list via email. Here are his books: Notes from the Margin of My Bible (OT & NT)…

Lebanon Road Report: December 14
It has been a wonderful couple of weeks at Lebanon Road. While our attendance has slacked just a bit, it is still very good and a lot of good things continue to happen. First, over the past couple of weeks, we have added some new members. Greg Holland, along with his daughter, Abby, placed membership with us. Both are Christians, as Abby was baptized at our camp this past Summer. They have been visiting with us for some time, and we are thankful they have decided to work and worship with us. Also, Bill Wolfe has come to worship with us under the oversight of our elders. His son, Jordan,…

Friday Links Roundup: Manna Edition
When Moses was leading the children of Israel through the wilderness, they complained that they had nothing to eat. God gave them food from heaven in the form of a small wafer. When the people saw it, they said, “What is it?” This led to the name of the food being “manna.” Last night, we saw something fall from the sky and wondered what it was. Okay, so we knew what it was, it just had been some time since we had seen it. Nashville was blanketed with snow! While we didn’t get a lot at our house (1-2 inches), and while it is already almost gone, it was fun…
