Book Review: AD 33
The book’s purpose is to give a thumbnail sketch of the world in that famous year. Duriez believes that two people–Tiberius and Jesus–changed the world in fundamental ways in the year 33, so he spends most of his time on them and those around them; actually spending more time on Tiberius.
One facet of this volume that serves as both a positive and negative is the scope. Duriez tries to give a look into what was happening in all parts of the world, including China and the Americas, in AD 33. If you are a history buff, you will enjoy these chapters. If you are looking for a work more focused upon the Roman Empire or Palestine, you will find these additions disappointing.
One drawback of the book is the almost “novel-like” approach to certain sections, usually introductions. At times it can be difficult to discern where the novel ends and the historical research begins.
Overall, this book is a decent read. It gets cumbersome in sections, but it fulfills its purpose. If you enjoy reading history and want a perspective on the world in AD 33, then buy this book. You may order it by clicking on the ad below.
