Job’s Reaction to a Really Bad Day

What is your first reaction when things go badly for you? What would you do if you lost just about everything except your life? What if all of that happened almost “all at once?” As I try to internalize those questions, I’m not always completely satisfied with my answers. I’m afraid that, at the very least, I would have a “pity party.” I’m afraid that the question, “Why me?” would come to my mind (and might even be expressed). I would hope that I would not blame God, but I know many who have done just that. Most of us are at least somewhat familiar with the book of Job. As we open the book, we…

    Power of Prayer

Today’s post is not long or overly profound. It is simply a reminder of something all Christians (including me) should know. However, sometimes we forget. We forget to utilize the most powerful resource we have: prayer. And I don’t just mean our individual prayers. Although it is an undeserved honor and privilege to talk to our Heavenly Father (Heb. 4:16; 2 Chron. 7:14), and He wants to hear from us about our concerns (1 Pet. 5:6-7), we are also told to pray for one another (James 5:16). Now, if you are like me, you have no problem getting those requests and being honored to be asked. But when was the…

    Blank Slate

This new year offers a blank slate for all. 2022. What will you do with the new opportunities it provides? My children and I have also embarked on another blank slate: a new home. We are still in the same town but have downsized significantly and with that, comes the opportunity of another blank slate … or many. All of this thinking about blank slates left me pondering something. I had to choose what to call them. If you noticed, I chose to say “opportunities.” I considered “challenges.” You see, some see a blank slate as scary or intimidating. In some ways, I guess we all do. However, when I…

Has the New Worn Off Yet?

By the time you read these words, we should be a couple of days or so into 2022. The first day of a new year arrived with celebration and fanfare.as it does every year. If it hasn’t happened already, it probably won’t be very long before all of us begin to realize that there is really not a whole lot that is new about a new year.   We are also less than two weeks removed from a day that at least the younger ones were so excited about. They got to open boxes, bags, and envelopes that contained some things that were brand new. By now, trash collectors may have…

    Learning Curve or Patient God?

As many of you know, I am going through the process of selling and buying a house. I have prayed diligently and all along I have said I trust God to provide and direct (1 Pet. 5:7). While making this size of financial decision is important and I believe God wants us to be good stewards of the blessings He provides, I have even said that this is not a decision with direct eternal impact. We can get to heaven from our current address or any other where we land. So why, last week when a housing inspection put the sale of our current home in jeopardy and ultimately placed…

    An Unusual Thanksgiving Post

The following material may be familiar to some who read it. It is from The Hiding Place, a book written by Corrie Ten Boom.  She wrote about some of the experiences that she had while in a Nazi concentration camp. The person identified as Betsie in this material is the sister of Corrie Ten Boom. The material is from a section of the book entitled “Barrack 28.” I’m offering this material at this time for those of us who may be struggling to think of something for which to be thankful at this season of the year or at any time for that matter. It is my conviction that most,…

    Lizards or Alligators

I saw a lizard the other day and it reminded me of a time in my very distant past that has always lived in my memory bank.  I grew up in a small town in a time when you walked to town to do your shopping. As a very little girl, I remember what a treat it was to walk with my grandmother to town when she needed to shop. We had to walk past an open area that had a hand rail on one side because the land dropped off on that side of the sidewalk. As I was skipping along beside her (and probably talking), I saw a rather large lizard…
