Friday Links Roundup (Record-Setting Edition)
No, this isn’t a post about that 30-3 baseball game Wednesday night; although that was pretty amazing. I might have a little post about that on Monday (I’m thinking of using it for my devotional Sunday night). The record that was set yesterday concerns the weather. In Birmingham, the temperature crossed 100 degrees for the 14th day–this month! That is a record, and we are headed there again today. As I write this, it’s just after 9 AM and it’s already around 90. This is not a record that I want to be part of! Anyway, here are the links for your weekend: 1. Mitchell Skelton at The Mind of…

Book Review: "Hold Fast to That Which is Good"
Each year, the Lads to Leaders organization produces a book for study. The book is based upon the book or books young people involved in that program are studying for Bible Bowl. The latest book in this series has just been released. The book is designed to deal with topical studies that come from the texts for Bible Bowl. Those books for this year’s convention are First and Second Thessalonians, First and Second Timothy, and Titus. Obviously, there is no way every subject in those five great books could be covered in 13 lessons, but those in charge of Lads to Leaders did a good job selecting topics for young…

I Look Like Alicia Silverstone
Okay, I only 54% look like her (although I wish it were less). This is just a fun thing I thought you’d get a laugh from. I guess 64% of me is Alone Again… …Naturally.

Psalm 71
1. This psalm has many interesting points, but maybe its perspective is what makes it most interesting. This psalm is written from the perspective of an older man, trusting in God, but still in need of seeking God’s deliverance. The MacArthur Study Bible says, “At a time in his life when he thinks he should be exempt from certain kinds of troubles, he once again is personally attacked. Though his enemies conclude that God has abandoned him, the psalmist is confident that God will remain faithful” (page 791). 2. Knowing the perspective makes verse 1 quite an interesting opening. “Let me never be ashamed.” It seems as though the writer…

College Football Preview (Part II)
15. University of Tennessee Volunteers How in the world did I get stuck covering both Arkansas and UT? During my time at HU, I think I roomed exclusively with Arkansas and UT fans, so forgive me if I seem a bit slanted in covering these teams. Anyways, UT looks to have a good team with some key offensive players returning, but a murderous schedule. Let’s take a look. Strengths: Their freshman class. The Vols will have at least two impact true freshman who will receive significant playing time this fall. RB Lennon Creer will get an early shot due to suspensions/injuries and CB Eric Berry could be a starter a…

Book Review: "Pure Religion"
Pure Religion: A Study of James is the third book designed for Bible class study written by brother David Bragg, a long-time preacher in Missouri. This volume was published earlier this year by the Gospel Advocate Company. Pure Religion is close to my heart for two reasons. First, I love the book of James. Filled with practical teaching, the epistle reminds us how to live day-to-day. While there are some passages that are not “easy” to understand, overall James may very well be the most easily understood book of the New Testament. Christians need to know how to live not just on Sunday, but from Monday-Saturday. James addresses that subject.…

Psalm 70
This psalm, containing just 5 verses, is nearly identical to verses 13-17 of Psalm 40. For that reason, I am linking to the comments for Psalm 40 instead of republishing them here. Psalm 40 David prays for deliverance in both psalms, probably using the same words for two different situations.

Going to Spain (Bulletin Article for August 26)
As Paul closed his letter to the congregation in Rome, he told them of his great desire to evangelize the area now known as Spain. In Romans 15:23-24, Paul wrote, “But now, with no further place for me in these regions, and since I have had for many years a longing to come to you whenever I go to Spain—for I hope to see you in passing, and to be helped on my way there by you, for a while.” Later in the same chapter, Paul penned, “Therefore, when I have finished this, and have put my seal on this fruit of theirs, I will go on by way of…
