Golden Rights of Senior Americans

Those of us of“a certain age” remember Art Linkletter. He is best known for his humor. He was really good at getting young children to say funny things.

I read a book years ago written by Mr. Linkletter that contained a lot of very serious material regarding senior citizens. While the title sounds a little humorous, much of the material is not. One of the things I’ve kept in my files for years is what he called “Golden Rights of Senior Americans.” I’ve decided to share his thoughts here for your consideration.

  • Irrespective of individual status or achievement, Senior Americans have the right to expect to be held in high esteem and treated with consideration and dignity because of age alone.
  • Senior Americans have the right to independence, privacy and choice of persons with whom they live and associate; they also have the right not to fear abridgment of those rights because of advancing age.
  • In all instances where decisions governing personal health are concerned, Senior Americans have the right to complete and accurate information necessary to ensure freedom of choice in selection of health care services. They have the further right to expect medical treatment from persons whose knowledge is strengthened with compassion and whose judgment is governed by moral restraint.
  • Senior Americans have the right to manage their financial affairs, as well as the right to complete information and full disclosure of possible consequences from those through whom they seek assistance with the management of those affairs.
  • Senior Americans have the right to freedom from fear of mental and physical abuse, as well as from chemical or physical restraint except in medical emergencies.
  • Senior Americans have the right to the information and assistance needed to ensure a continuing healthy lifestyle.
  • Senior Americans have the right to choose how and with whom they spend leisure time, as well as the right to expect considerate assistance when they travel.
