If You Will, Then I Will…But If You Will Not, Then I Will

We are studying the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah in the Ladies’ Class I attend on Tuesday afternoons. We have made it to this well-known major prophet and it has been grueling to read and study about this man – how poorly he was treated, how close to death he came, and yet, he remained a faithful messenger for God.

Throughout this study we have seen multiple times the words I used for the title of this post. In fact, we have seen similar words throughout much of the Old Testament. As an example, the book of Deuteronomy has a list of blessings and cursings in the twenty-eighth chapter. When we pay careful attention to verse one and verse fifteen, we see the same message as this title.

What a great lesson to learn for our lives today! We serve the same God today that they served then. Since the Old Testament is written for our learning (Romans 15:4), shouldn’t we pay attention to these words from God through the prophet Jeremiah?

Or maybe we should pay careful attention to these words:

“He will render to each one according to his works:

to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality,

 he will give eternal life;

But for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but

obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.”  (Romans 2:6-8)
