An Open Letter to the United States Supreme Court

Your Honors,

I may not be a person of great influence, but I understand that, if I do not use what influence I have, I am squandering a great gift. So, though I wonder if you will ever see this letter, I am going to write it anyway in the hopes that it comes across your screen or desk in some way.

In just a few days, you will most likely hear arguments that pertain to the future of marriage in our nation. I was born in the United States of America and I am proud to call this nation my home. As a Christian, I realize that my true citizenship is in heaven, but while here on the earth, I can think of no place I would rather be. One of my goals in life is to help this country truly be the best she can be. Your role, august as it is, can help shape this nation for good or for ill and I have no doubt that you understand that.

As you hear the arguments dealing with Proposition 8 as well as the Defense of Marriage Act, there is no doubt in my mind that you will hear from some amazing people of influence. Some will speak, while others will have written testimony. I have no doubt that you will receive mountains of words on both sides of the argument from experts in all sorts of fields of study, from psychologists to scientists to historians. Certainly, there will be those who are experts in civil law who have their say, as well.

Here is my request, your Honors. As you listen to these passionate and well-thought-out arguments, would you take a break and walk to the front of your building? The reason I make this odd request is this: a simple glance up at the beautiful structure will remind you that one voice needs to be allowed in the hearings. It is the voice of God.You see, over your building, front and center, is a depiction of Moses of old, and he is holding the tablets of stone, representing the 10 Commandments. This is clearly a reminder that, without God’s voice being heard, there can not be true justice and civil peace.

As one who believes in Scripture, I am begging you to remember that this nation was founded on principles of Scripture. While not every Founding Father was a devout Christian, the vast majority of them still understood the need of a standard and argued that the standard should be the Holy Scriptures, found in the canon of the Bible.

In those words, God has made it clear that homosexuality is a sin. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 lists this sin along with many others, but makes it clear that one can stop this sin. Yes, it would be difficult, and I know some who struggle with it, but God will help, forgive, and heal. He will do the same for our nation if we will turn from sin, and you can be an instrument of that healing.

I ask you, please, to consider allowing God’s voice in your chamber. It has been held by those on the court before. If I may remind you, the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, the honorable John Jay, once wrote these words to his wife:

God’s will be done; to him I resign–in him I confide. Do the like. Any other philosophy applicable to this occasion is delusive. Away with it.

In some of his other papers are found these words:

The Bible is the best of all books, for it is the word of God and teaches us the way to be happy in this world and in the next. Continue therefore to read it and to regulate your life by its precepts.

While he was just a man, I am asking you to remember that those words represented commonly-held beliefs as our nation was founded and grew to be the great power that it is.

Now we are silencing the voice of God. Would you consider that, as we have done so, our nation has been falling deeper into depraved actions, debt, and confusion? And now, we are trying to change one of the institutions that provides the very foundation of a nation, that of the home. Is there any reason to think it will stop with homosexual marriage? What other cases will come into your chamber in future years? If you allow homosexual marriage in our nation, you are not only silencing God’s voice, you are opening the door via precedent to marriages of all kinds.

Please, your Honors, I ask you to listen to God on this matter. As a citizen of this nation, I beg you to follow His way and see if He does not bless our country again. While it is not about just a single issue, it is obvious that marriage is at the very fabric of any society. When we redefine and unravel that institution, we are destroying the fabric of a country.

Our Founding Fathers knew that. The Bible teaches that. I am praying that you will realize that.

May the grace of God bless you in all your decisions, and may His peace be yours in the wake of such times of turmoil.

Sincerely,

Adam Faughn

Nashville, Tennessee
