Slow Down the Scriptures
I was practicing a sermon a few weeks ago. (Yes, I do that…yes, it’s out loud…but, hey, it works!) As I did, there was something I noticed, and it was something that I have worked on before but it obviously needed work again. It is also something I have noticed other preachers doing. At least that means I’m in good company. But, maybe it is not the best practice when delivering a lesson from God’s Word. It is this: when we get to a verse in Scripture to quote (or even read), we put things in about 5th gear and fly through it. Then, when we are done with the…

About Is Easier Than To
From what I understand, it appears to me that the main item on the menu for some people is roast. I’m not talking about roast beef or roast pork. I’m talking about people being roasted or sometimes skewered. Sadly, this seems to happen right after people have been to worship on Sunday. The topic of conversation all too often consists of roasting/skewering the preacher, the elders, the song leader, the Bible class teacher, or some other brother or sister. The subject may or may not have anything to do with what just happened at the worship service. It could have to do with something else. The “something else” subjects many times have to do with…

A Tale of Two Social Feeds
Feed #1 This is my social media. On it, I want to tell you what I have done. I want you to read what I think about things. I want you to know where I am, what I am doing, and who I am with. Through my feed, you will see who I am wishing a happy anniversary and who I am telling “happy birthday” to. On here, you will see pictures of me. You will see my new clothes and you will see me standing by my new car. You’ll know that I voted…and who I voted for (or against). Through my social media feed, you will know what…

“The Mick” and “The Man”
He had a number of nicknames, but his most well-known nickname was simply “The Mick.” All that a fan of baseball has to hear is “The Mick” and we know that the person being discussed is Mickey Mantle. Likewise, those same baseball fans know immediately who is being discussed when somebody says “The Man.” Stan “The Man” Musial was my first sports hero. I can’t see any possibility of anybody ever taking his place in my mind. Recently I watched a clip of an interview with Bob Costas. He was discussing an evening during which he, Mickey Mantle, and Stan Musial were together at Mr. Costas’ house. Bob Costas had invited Mickey Mantle to St. Louis for some…

Legacy Recipe: Skroodle Salad
“In the good ole summertime” the heat can get us down. The thought of cooking a large meal sounds like torture, but this salad recipe I’m sharing today is so good and filling. I’ve had it for years but it first appeared in the Metropolis Planet, my hometown newspaper. A woman named Linda Adam won a recipe contest with this recipe! It’s perfect for a meal (and perfect for a post since I’m overloaded with work to do). I hope you enjoy it!! SKROODLE SALAD 1 can red beans (black beans will work too) 1 can mixed vegetables (or one pkg.frozen vegetables thawed slightly) 1 package (8 oz) skroodle noodles…

Off They Went
Typically, I write my articles for Legacy some time in advance, or, at the very least, I get the main idea scribbled down and fill in the gaps later. Today’s article, though, is one that is fresh because it just happened hours before writing and because it is on my mind so much. She got her license. My little “sweet girl,” the girl who made me a daddy, is now a driver. We are so proud of her. She often puts herself down and she nearly always doubts herself, but she passed her permit test on the first try and her driving test a few months later on the first…

It’s Not about the Pizza
Recently, I was listening to a discussion among some men on the radio about a pizza restaurant they had visited. During the discussion they mentioned the fact that, when they walked into the restaurant, there was a sign that welcomed them (and others) to the restaurant that had been recognized for ten years in a row as the cleanest restaurant in that particular chain of restaurants. The curiosity of one of those men caused him to ask an employee what they did in order to earn that distinction. That, in turn, led to the young lady giving him and his friends a tour and discussing the procedures they had in place to…

God’s People are a Wonder
Last week, I was blessed to be part of Horizons at Freed-Hardeman University. If you know me well at all, you know that FHU is one of my happiest places on earth (along with anywhere my family is and the beach). Horizons is built to be similar to a summer camp, but allows teens to pick elective classes as well as attend theme classes, devotionals, evening worship, singings, and help with service projects, all while getting a small taste of what it’s like to live in a dorm room and eat at a dining hall. This year’s theme for Horizons was “Wonder.” We spent the week challenged to wonder and…

“We are a _________ Family”
I’ve read it on social media more times than I can count. I have had people introduce themselves to me using it. It’s when they try to describe their family and they fill in the blank with something of this world, and it is typically an activity of their children. “We are a softball family.” “We are a theater family.” “We are a soccer family.” “We are an academic family.” “We are a football family.” “We are a band family.” And, yes, I have had people who were followers of Jesus introduce themselves to me that way. Before I even knew the names of all the family members, they had…
