Slow Down, Relax, and Enjoy
It snowed yesterday and apparently all night (judging from the amount of snow on the ground). It had been predicted for days before the event finally took place. We gathered extra food supplies along with all the other masses at the grocery store. (Jim actually followed a woman to her car and helped her unload her groceries just so he could have her cart!) We watched The Weather Channel as well as our local television station and saw the totals fluctuate between a dusting of snow to at least a foot. Our 4 to 8 inches turned out to be 5 inches of snow on the ground. And I love it!
Now I know that some of you are thinking I am crazy for saying that I love snow, but I do and I always have. I think the thing that I love most about it, besides the beauty of it falling and covering everything with a beautiful white coat, is the time it allows us to slow down, relax, and enjoy life.
I think about being a teenager and joining in with all of my other friends when we borrowed an old car hood from the local junkyard and sledded down a big hill at our local country club. We were piled in that homemade sled and flew toward the bottom of that hill. What fun we had and what memories we made.
I think about being closed in a warm house while God covers the ground with such light fluffy snow. I have always felt the coziness of having family around when it is difficult to get out and about.
It reminds me of vegetable beef soup being made and cookies being baked for a meal on a cold snowy day.
It reminds me of the beauty of seeing so many beautiful birds gathering around the bird feeder and watching their antics as they fight for the best spot on the feeder.
It reminds me of snowman building and snowball fights with our children, and then going into the house and having a steaming cup of hot chocolate and some of those cookies we made.
I love being able to slow down for a few days to just relax and not feel the burden of too many obligations.
What I love most about snowy days is the reminder that our Creator made this beautiful event along with everything else we enjoy in life.
For those of you who are fretting over not being able to get out and about and work or shop or whatever else it is you do in your busy day, why don’t you just try this simple recipe… slow down, relax, and just enjoy the blessings of life.
“He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the ashes” (Psalm 147:16).
“She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are
clothed with scarlet” (Proverbs 31:21).
