002 : Giving Your Children Proper School Supplies

Our August podcast encourages parents as they send their children back to school. Buying school supplies is just par for the course, but the most important “supplies” you can give your children cannot be purchased or put in a backpack. Using real school supplies as our examples, we share four traits to instill in your children as they head back to school.

August 2013 podcast

Show Notes: Supplies Your Kids Need for School

#1: A Ruler Reminds us to Measure Our Words

  • Ephesians 4:29, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouth, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
  • Colossians 4:6, “Let your speech be always gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”
  • Proverbs 10:19, “When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.”

#2: Glue Reminds us to Stick to the Word of God

  • Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
  • Scripture contains “all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3)

#3: Scissors Remind us to Cut Out Harmful Influences

  • 1 Corinthians 10:13 teaches us that God provides a way of escape
  • Do we take that way?

#4: Paper and Pencil Remind us to Communicate with God

  • 2 Timothy 2:15 “study,” “rightly handle the Word of truth”
  • Do I pray regularly?

Huffduffer: Make Your Own Audio Feed Online for Free

A few weeks ago, we were involved in a blog hop concerning podcasts that we enjoy listening to. If you go back and look through that post, you can see that I listen, via subscription, to a lot of podcasts. In fact, there are a couple more I’d like to subscribe to, but I just don’t feel I have the time right now.

But even if you aren’t a podcast person, today’s post is for you. I recently discovered a free online tool for all those random audio files you find online that you’d like to hear, but you don’t want to keep running around the internet to find them. How can you get them all in one place so you can listen to them whenever you might like?

Huffduffer header

Enter Huffduffer.

Yes, it takes a couple of steps, but it’s free and very easy. Here’s how it works in 5 simple steps.

1. Create an Account. Visit Huffduffer and sign up, just like you would for any other website. It’s free and I’m not sure they could make it any easier.

2. Add the Bookmarklet. Yes, that’s tech speak, but simply go to the bottom of the Huffduffer homepage, and you will see this text:

Huffduffer intro 1

If you are using Chrome, I highly recommend the extension. Any other browser, just drag and drop as it says.

3. Surf the Web. Duh. Just like normal.

4. Saving an Audio File You Want to Listen to Later. So, you’re visiting the Lebanon Road Sermons page and you hear their preacher has delivered a masterpiece (must have been when JD or Harry was preaching), but you don’t have time right now to listen to it?

Huffduffer intro 2

  • RIGHT-CLICK on the audio file you want, and select “Copy Link Address.”
  • Go to the extension or bookmarklet you just installed from Huffduffer. In Chrome, it looks like this (the little finger pointing):

Huffduffer intro 3

5. Give the file a title and the other information, and that’s it! Now you have that audio file in your Huffduffer account.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

Once you have added that file, you can go back to your Huffduffer page and listen any time you want, of course.

Or, you can subscribe to your own feed and have these “random” posts delivered as a podcast! You can do so via iTunes, the new Apple Podcasts app, or just in rss (like I do).

Huffduffer intro 4

So now, you don’t have to run all around the internet to re-find that one sermon you wanted to hear. You don’t have to subscribe to a podcast to test it out. Just add these files to your Huffduffer account, and you can create your own mix and match of random audio files to listen to whenever you want, however you want.

If you want to see my feed so far on Huffduffer, click here. And, by the way, you can subscribe to other user’s Huffduffer feeds as a podcast, too, if you would like.

QUESTION: What do you think of this new online tool?

If You Like Books……..

If You Like Books……..

It is no secret that I love reading. But I know that many of you do, as well.

An older “tradition” that isn’t done as much anymore is the book club. However, I am thrilled today to let you know about a 21st Century version that you can be part of!

Dale Jenkins and I are beginning “The Pages Podcast.” It is a modern-day book club. Each month, we will announce a book geared toward Christian living. Then, on an assigned night, we will discuss the book in podcast form. You can listen live to our discussion, make comments in the chat room and even, if time allows, call in to make comments. Our goal is to get guests, including some of the authors, to come on with us as we discuss the book.

Now, here’s the best part: we are working on plans to get the books for less money than you would pay for them in book stores! Once the title is announced, we will let you know how to get that month’s book.

Please know that this is not just for preachers. We plan to talk about biographies, finance books, leadership books, books on parenting and family, and general Christian living books. Also, we have a goal of discussing books that are both new and old, so there will be much variety.

Now, what can you do?

1. If you would like to be involved, you can “like” the page on Facebook. If you are not on Facebook, or prefer email, email your interest to [email protected]. By letting us know, you will be added to our email list and will be notified of the first title (to be named in early February) and the date of the first podcast (early March).

2. Spread the word. The more people we have involved, the more fun this will be. A larger number will also help us “leverage” with authors and book stores as we seek to get you the best price possible on the book each month. It would be great to start out with 100 folks!

We hope you will enjoy this new venture, and that you will learn from the reading and the discussion of these books over the coming months. Our goal is to record the podcasts in the evenings so as many folks as possible can join in live.

Dale recently posted a “press release” about the launch. Here is that post.

Equip Network Week Post #4: What Does the Future Hold?

Equip Network Week Post #4: What Does the Future Hold?

This week, we have taken the time to share The Equip Network (TEN) with you. On Tuesday, we looked at the brief but amazing history of this family of podcasts. On Wednesday, we shared the three “flagship” programs with you. Thursday, we told you about the other three programs that have been available from the time of the launch.

But what does the future hold? Will it be just these six programs?

Absolutely not! There has already been an amazing number of listeners to the six programs, but there has also been a significant number of show ideas submitted. While not every one of these will eventually become a podcast, several will.

In about one week, in fact, a 7th program will join TEN. Behind the Pulpit will be a program dealing with the technical aspects of preaching. This weekly program will help preachers with their preparation and delivery as they preach. Wayne Roberts and Bob Turner will host this program, set to launch Friday, October 1. You can read more about that program here.

Once Behind the Pulpit comes “live,” there are other shows in the idea stage that will join in the coming weeks and months. Speaking with the founders, I can assure that programs will cover a wide range of topics, but that they have the goal of each show being distinct, and avoiding two shows being too similar.

So, what’s coming? Here are some ideas that should be launching in the coming months, but I do not know the show names yet. There will be a comedy show, with clean humor based on things that happen in church and in our daily lives. There will be a program for missionaries, where they can encourage one another as they serve all over the world. Programs are also being developed that will deal with the family, with Christian ladies, and with restoration history. No doubt other programs will be developed in the future.

I hope you will pray for The Equip Network. It is a site that is dedicated to using technology to God’s glory. Listen to the programs that interest you, and be encouraged by each show. Keep up with the website, and be on the lookout for new programs as they are developed.

As in all things, may God be glorified by the efforts of The Equip Network!

Equip Network Week Post #3: The New Shows

This week, we are sharing information about the newly formed Equip Network, which is a family of podcasts, all done by members of the churches of Christ. On Monday, we shared a brief history, which you can read here. Yesterday, we took a look at the three “flagship” programs, which you can read about here.

Today, we want to share the remaining programs with you to which you can currently subscribe. Enjoy these 3 shows!

————————————————————————-

Equipped Today (hosted by a different speaker each week)

This is a wonderful addition to The Equip Network (TEN). Equipped Today is a brief daily devotional, designed to get your day started off on the right foot. Each week, a different speaker will give you encouraging and Biblical information. Speakers so far have been Jeff Jenkins, Dale Jenkins, and Joe Wells. Brother Glenn Colley is the speaker this week, and many others are already lined up for weeks to come.

Besides the uplifting and Biblical content, the best part about this podcast is that it is just 3-5 minutes each day! It is meant to contain a devotional thought that you can use to get you going-or to keep you going-as you face life each day.

Equipped Today can be found on iTunes, or you can check out the page devoted to this show (and listen to all past episodes) on the TEN website by clicking here.

——————-

LiveNow.Teen (host: J.D. Schwartz)

This podcast is very similar to Equipped Today, but the major difference is that J.D. Schwartz records these programs with teenagers in mind. Each program contains a very helpful devotional thought for teens to take with them as they face the world.

Jon David does a great job with these devotionals, and, much like Equipped Today, keeps them brief, with each program being about 4 minutes in length. Teenagers (and adults like me, too!) will find these programs, which come out 5 days each week, to be helpful and encouraging.

I would encourage every teen to subscribe to this podcast. You adults might want to hear these programs as well. I know I enjoy them each day!

You can subscribe via iTunes, or check out the page on the TEN website (which includes all past episodes) by clicking here.

——————-

The Hey Joe Show (host: Joe Wells)

Joe Wells hosts this weekly podcast for teenagers, and it is already seeing significant growth, despite only being three episodes old! Joe records this program on Sunday nights at 9PM Central time, and does so with a live chatroom on talkshoe.com.

What sets The Hey Joe Show apart from other programs is that he invites teenagers to call, text, email, or Facebook him questions during the show. So far, most of the questions (as you can imagine, being a show for teens) have come via text message.

Joe Wells, who serves as the editor of Kaio Magazine from Focus Press, has an approach on the show that lives up to the show’s purpose: “straight talk for teens.” Joe will always address difficult subjects, but will do so in a clear and Biblical way. I greatly enjoy hearing Joe speak, so this is a wonderful opportunity to hear him on a weekly basis.

Enjoy subscribing via iTunes, or check out the webpage (where you can listen to or watch previous episodes) by clicking here.

————————————————————————-

Tomorrow, we will wrap up this series of posts by peaking behind the curtain a little bit. We will give you some idea of the “big picture” of The Equip Network, and also let you know of some ideas for other shows that are coming soon.

Equip Network Week Post #2: The Three Flagship Shows

Yesterday, we shared the history and basis of The Equip Network. You can read that article here.

Today, our goal is to let you know about the three shows that were around before the network started, and that are considered the “flagship” programs.

—————————————

iPreach (hosts: Dale Jenkins and Adam Faughn)

iPreach, as we mentioned yesterday, has been around longer than any other program on The Equip Network (TEN). With over 110 programs, brother Dale Jenkins and I have covered many different topics, and have had our share of growing pains with the technology.

The purpose of iPreach is to “aid, enlighten, inform, and entertain” preachers. Each week, strive to do that with helpful information that is given by us, as well as by our many guests. With our 2nd show, we had our first guests, and less than 15 of our programs have gone “guest-less,” meaning we have assembled a long list of those who have appeared with us. Multiple appearances have been made by several, including Jerrie Barber, David Shannon, Jim Faughn, and Jay Lockhart.

Our program records nearly every Friday at 10AM Central, and is usually 30-40 minutes in length. We sometimes go longer when we have a “round table” with several guests. We now estimate our listening audience to be well over 300 per episode.

You can access iPreach on iTunes. Also, you can see our homepage on talkshoe.com by clicking here. We have a live chat that goes on during the recording, and you are welcome to be part of that, as well, on the talkshoe page.

————————————-

Engage! Where Christ and Culture Meet (hosts: Caleb O’Hara, Wesley Walker & Joe Wells)

Engage! is also a weekly program, and the focus of this show is to help Christians answer “hot button” issues that face us daily. One of the aspects of Engage! that has made it popular is that the hosts are not afraid to tackle some very difficult topics, such as homosexuality or illegal immigration. Caleb, Wesley and Joe do their best to give Biblical teaching each week.

Engage! also utilizes talkshoe.com to record their program, which usually lasts around 45 minutes. They record on Tuesdays at 10AM Central, and also have a chat available during recording.

If you enjoy studying current issues with a Biblical basis, you will want to subscribe to Engage! via iTunes or from the Equip Network site.

———————————

MinistryGeek This Week (hosts: Michael Hite, Caleb O’Hara and Dale Jenkins)

The “Geek” (Michael Hite) and his two sidekicks (Caleb and Dale) give advice each week on how to use modern technology in ministry through this weekly podcast.

Michael is a teacher at Bear Valley Bible Institute in Denver, Colorado. Among his teaching responsibilities is a class on technology in ministry. This podcast is a great way to share the knowledge that these students learn, but in a talk-shoe style program.

As one who loves technology (but has no idea how it works), I have found MinistryGeek to be a great help. The hosts are able to share practical information in a way that is easy to understand for most people. Subjects discussed so far in the history of this program have included PowerPoint, church websites, and Bible software. Usually, a topic is discussed for a minimum of two weeks (one show each week).

MinistryGeek usually lasts between 60 and 70 minutes each week, and the guys record at 10AM Central on Wednesday. You can subscribe to the podcast via iTunes, or check out the website here.

———————————————

From these three programs, others have “sprung up” and joined TEN. Tomorrow, we’ll tell you about those.

Equip Network Week Post #1: What Is This Thing?

Equip Network Week Post #1: What Is This Thing?

As many of you know, I am a cohost on a weekly podcast called iPreach. Dale Jenkins and I started recording this podcast about 2 years ago, and we have now done over 110 episodes. Each week, we try to live up to the purpose of our show which is “to aid, enlighten, inform, and entertain preachers.”

When Dale and I started iPreach, to be honest, we had no idea how long we would keep the program going. While we had a few “fuzzy” long range goals, we did not really know if anyone would listen consistently. All we knew was that we liked podcasts, and thought that we could deliver something that would be helpful to our fellow preachers.

When I write about iPreach in this series, I’ll give more of the history of that show, but a few connections on that show have led to the formation of The Equip Network, or TEN. My friends Caleb O’hara, Joe Wells, Wesley Walker and Dale Jenkins are the main workers on this network, and several others serve as advisors.

The Equip Network is a “family” of podcasts, all done by members of the Lord’s Church, and all dealing with specific areas of need. Here is the major difference in the network and in other podcasts you may have heard of before. These are not just sermons put out there for people to hear. There is a great need for those, but many churches do that already. Instead, the podcasts on The Equip Network are (1) talk show style programs, (2) devotional programming, or (3) call in shows. It is this unique style of programs that set the podcasts on TEN apart from others. As far as the four “founders” know, there is no other such network in the world among Christians.

For the rest of this week, I will be sharing with you the idea behind the current podcasts on The Equip Network, and will also give you a little “sneak peek” as to what might be coming up soon.

Currently, there are six programs, with a seventh set to begin in a couple of weeks. Some are weekly while others are 5 days each week. We’ll tell you more about each one this week.

For more information, go to the website of The Equip Network here.

Also, take a moment to read a recent post by Caleb O’hara on the founding of TEN here.

BY THE WAY, even if you have no idea what podcasting is, you can still listen to these great programs. When you visit the website for The Equip Network, you will be able to hear any or all of the programs for the last 3 weeks. Archives for shows that have been around for longer (iPreach, MinistryGeek, and Engage!) will be up in the near future, so you can listen to those as well.

This is truly an exciting network, and I hope you will take the time to learn from these programs, and to be encouraged by them. In a world filled with negative media, what an uplifting way to spend your time listening to solid Christian teaching and devotionals.

Friday Links Roundup: Equip Network Week Edition

Friday Links Roundup: Equip Network Week Edition

Next week on our blog, we are going to take a little “detour” from our usual publishing schedule. Instead, we are going to write REviews and PREviews of the amazing network of podcasts now available (and soon to be available) on the newly formed Equip Network.

What is The Equip Network? Well, you’ll have to wait until next week to find out, but, if you read this blog, or if you enjoy listening to good and helpful Christian programming, you will want to read every post next Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Be looking for it, and get ready to be see what can be done with one simple idea used to God’s glory!

————————

On to the links for this week:

1. John Brown writes a very good post summarizing the Bible’s teaching on the subject of mercy. Enjoy “Thinking about Mercy.”

2. Are you one who needs help in making sure you as encouraging as you can possibly be? Neal Pollard gives us a great list called “Twenty Tips on Encouragement.”

3. A new blog for youth ministers started recently. Youth Ministry 101 gives some great tips that can be used by youth ministers, or by anyone who works with young people. So far, my favorite tip was this one, a devo idea.

4. Finally, the blog A Conquering Faith recently posted a very helpful article that will give you great and simple encouragement. It is called “In Trials, We are Tempted to Disobey God.”

————————

We hope you have a great weekend. Don’t just look forward to time for “self.” Look forward to time with God! Be especially sure that you spend time with Him on His day!

Friday Links Roundup: Milestone Edition

As I start this post, we are just a few minutes away from a milestone. iPreach, the podcast that I co-host with Dale Jenkins, is getting ready to be recorded. While all the episodes are fun, this one will be very special, because it is our 100th program! When we first started, we honestly had no idea how many we would do (we weren’t sure, with all the technical snafus, we’d get through the first one!). Today, we record our 100th program. All have been a joy.

We have no way of knowing an exact number of listeners, but we do know that around 200 folks download just from the talkshoe website each week. If about that number download from iTunes (which is very possible), then each program reaching around 400 people. We are quite confident that each reaches more than 300 preachers, youth leaders, elders and members.

Dale and I honestly do not know how many long iPreach will continue to be around, but we enjoy recording these. We are told quite often that the podcast is a help, and that’s why we do it. We hope many are encouraged as they seek to preach God’s Word, and it is humbling to me to have a small part in helping them do that.

If you’ve never listened before, make sure you download our 100th program. It will be a lot of fun. You can get it (after about noon Central time) from the talkshoe website here, or from iTunes.

On to the links for this week:

1. One thing elders need to encourage within any congregation is interaction among different age groups. It is especially true that older members need to help younger members. Jeff Jenkins helps us focus on this aspect of church life in his post “Everybody Needs a Big Brother.”

2. Following God’s commandments is essential, but doing so with the proper heart is also essential. Neal Pollard helps us see this in a great way in “The Halakhah, The Haggadah, and The Heart.”

3. Finally, a fun financial post. I like playing Monopoly, but I don’t get to play often (I don’t have the patience for it, usually). Christian Personal Finance did a great post on real-life money by applying winning Monopoly strategies. Enjoy “How to Win at Monopoly & How to Win in Real Life.”

————————

We are set to begin our Vacation Bible School at Lebanon Road on Sunday. I hope to post a few pictures next week from that, but I won’t send out emails each time I do. Make sure you check back often for those. If you’re near Nashville, we hope you’ll come and be with us!

No matter where you are, don’t forget the Lord on His Day.

iPreach Request

This Friday, Lord willing, iPreach will deal with a very specific topic. Because we will be focused on such a narrow subject, we need input!

Dale Jenkins and I will be discussing the program Evernoteevernote logo, and how it can be used by preachers and churches. I use it for several purposes, and am growing more and more fond of it all the time.

Here is where we need help. If you use this program, you can help us in one of two ways:

1. We could use you as a guest if you are willing and able. We plan to record around 10AM Central on Friday. We would love to have someone who uses the program extensively on the podcast with us. If you can do that, send me an email (adfaughn AT gmail DOT com), or send a direct message on Twitter (faughn4).

2. If you aren’t willing/able to be interviewed, but you have a usage tip of Evernote (or a similar program), please send it to me via email or Twitter. Any tip you give will help us build a list of ways this program can help preachers.

Thanks in advance for your help!
